Then I started to realize there was really a memo, and a guy, Mattias Desmet [professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium], talked about it. And it\u2019s great. The theory of mass formation hypnosis. And I could see it then. Once I kind of started to look for it, I saw it everywhere,\u201d the singer of \u201cCocaine\u201d said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cThen I remembered seeing little things on YouTube which were like subliminal advertising. It had been going on for a long time: that thing about \u2018you will own nothing and you will be happy.\u2019 And I thought, \u2018What\u2019s that mean?\u2019 And bit by bit, I put a rough kind of jigsaw puzzle together. And that made me even more resolute,\u201d Clapton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Clapton said he chose to speak out in opposition because \u201cmy career had almost gone anyway. At the point where I spoke out it had been almost been 18 months since I\u2019d been forcibly retired. \u2018I joined forces with Van and I got the tip Van was standing up to the measures and I thought, \u2018Why is nobody else doing this?\u2019 so I contacted him. He said, \u2018I\u2019m just objecting, really. But it seems like we\u2019re not even allowed to do that. And nobody else is doing it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cHe sent me Stand and Deliver, which he\u2019d already recorded. And it was during the process of talking about that with another musician, getting excited and sharing the news I found that nobody wanted to hear that.&nbsp; I was mystified, I seemed to be the only person that found it exciting or even appropriate. I\u2019m cut from a cloth where if you tell me I can\u2019t do something, I really want to know why,\u201d Clapton said.<\/p>\n<p>The four-and-a-half minute blues song includes some harsh lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you wanna\u2019 be a free man or do you wanna be a slave?\u201d Clapton, the former Cream guitarist, sings in the&nbsp;song. \u201cDo you wanna\u2019 wear these chains until you\u2019re lying in the grave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other lyrics include: \u201cMagna Carta, Bill of Rights\/ The constitution, what\u2019s it worth?\/ You know they\u2019re gonna\u2019 grind us down, ah\/ Until it really hurts\/ Is this a sovereign nation\/ Or just a police state?\/ You better look out, people\/ Before it gets too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song ends with Clapton singing, \u201cDick Turpin wore a mask too,\u201d a reference to an 18th century highwayman who wore a mask to hide his identity as he committed crimes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent, and ran the Drudge Report from 2010 to 2015.
