As Biden took a victory lap on the eve of his first anniversary as president, so many citizens believe the nation is rudderless that a Republican congressional leader told me his constituents are asking, \u201cWho\u2019s leading the country?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden highlighted several economic accomplishments during 2021. We fact-checked these assertions. We also asked the ranking Republican on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), to comment on the president\u2019s self-assessment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact-checking Joe Biden\u2019s press conference on January 19, 2022:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden claim #1: \u201c<\/strong>We created 6 million new jobs \u2014 more jobs in one year than at any time before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/poverty-studies\/december-jobs-report-confirms-democrats-1-9-trillion-american-rescue-plan-didnt-produce-a-single-promised-job-in-2021\/\">economy added<\/a>&nbsp;6.1 million jobs between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2021, that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/joe-biden-added-zero-jobs-to-the-economy-in-2021\">slightly fewer jobs<\/a> than the Congressional Budget Office projected would have been created if he had done nothing. Last February, the Congressional Budget Office estimated the U.S. economy would add an average of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2021-02\/56965-Economic-Outlook.pdf\">521,000 jobs a month<\/a>&nbsp;during that time for a total of 6.252 million jobs \u2014 136,000 more jobs than Biden delivered. Biden\u2019s surrogates promised at least a million more jobs thanks to his own legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2021 should have been a banner year,\u201d Rep. Brady told me. \u201cBiden inherited an economy that was rebounding much faster than anyone expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, here\u2019s what we got under the president,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe missed all three quarters of economic growth expectations. \u2026 He is now 1.1 million jobs short of his promises from the last COVID stimulus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brady said much of the American Rescue Plan was wasted. \u201cThe president rushed through a one-party, nearly $2 trillion COVID stimulus. Very little of it actually went to fighting COVID \u2014 certainly not enough for the tests or the treatments that would have helped,\u201d he said. \u201cHe inherited an opportunity with lifesaving vaccines and treatments and tests that were already being developed and just simply was not competent in executing any type of plan on COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden began his presidency to use the baseball analogy, standing on third base and promptly stole second,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden claim #2: <\/strong>\u201cThe unemployment rate dropped to 3.9%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this is true, the problem facing the nation is not so much unemployment as job vacancies and a depressed labor market. \u201cSmall business pessimism is at a 48-year low, and economic optimism by families has just fallen through the floor,\u201d said Brady.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden claim #3<\/strong>: \u201cChild poverty dropped by nearly 40% \u2014 the biggest drop ever in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This number is purely speculative and based on a speculative analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-left-promised-this-biden-policy-would-slash-child-poverty-heres-what-really-happened\">Biden\u2019s reinvented Child Tax Credit<\/a>, from The Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University. Its scholars computed that the CTC, which has essentially been recast as a monthly welfare check, \u201chas the potential to reduce monthly child poverty by up to 40 percent on its own.\u201d Among other things, they assumed that every eligible family signed up for the credit \u2014 which is erroneous. The left-wing People\u2019s Policy Project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplespolicyproject.org\/2021\/07\/15\/what-could-have-been-for-the-child-benefit\/\">found<\/a> that \u201c90% or more of the (mostly very poor) kids the IRS needed to reach through its much-maligned non-filer portal have not in fact been reached.\u201d A different group of scholars at the University of Notre Dame looked at <em>real <\/em>data and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/povertymeasurement.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Monthly_poverty_rates_updated_thru_November_2021_v2.pdf\">concluded<\/a> that, while the CTC reduced child poverty somewhat, \u201cwe still do not see the sharp decline in the poverty rate for children that had been forecasted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden claim #4<\/strong>: \u201cFor the first time in a long time, this country\u2019s working people actually got a raise \u2014 actually got a raise.&nbsp; The people \u2014 the bottom 40% saw their income go up the most of all those that got a raise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that wages rose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/empsit_01072022.pdf\">4.7%<\/a> in 2021 but inflation rose by 7%, the highest price spike since 1982. \u201cFor a lot of families, because inflation has been so high in one year, President Biden took back all of the wage gains that families were seeing from the previous years under President Trump\u2019s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,\u201d said Rep. Brady. Real wages fell by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/in-2021-inflation-gave-the-typical-american-a-2-4-pay-cut\">2.4%<\/a> last year, cutting the average family\u2019s paycheck by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidenflation-tax-costing-americans-5k-per-year\">$5,000 a year<\/a>. Consumer prices surged by $3,500, according to the Penn Wharton Budget Model, while an additional $1,500 came in the form of higher income taxes due to a phenomenon known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/tax-basics\/bracket-creep\/\">bracket creep<\/a>.\u201d The condition, which was common in the 1970s, occurs when inflation pushes taxpayers into higher tax brackets, despite the fact that their real wages have stagnated or eroded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden claim #5<\/strong>: \u201cWe heard dire warnings about how these supply chain problems could create a real crisis around the holidays, so, we acted.
