Unfortunately, Anderson Cooper had used that exact terminology last Thursday, and a review of network transcripts shows that CNN hosts have repeated it at least half a dozen times in precisely the way Stelter called unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Stelter dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/rs\/date\/2022-01-23\/segment\/01\">part<\/a> of the January 23 episode of \u201cReliable Sources\u201d to reading banners Fox News had posted on the screen during the past week, including one that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReliableSources\/status\/1485326898498617350\">read<\/a>, \u201cThe Biden administration is a clown car driving off a cliff.\u201d An outraged Stelter said, \u201cThat\u2019s the great example of the incendiary rhetoric that you would have never seen, let\u2019s say from another channel during the Trump years or now during the Biden years.\u201d Such language illustrates \u201cthe imagined drama that Fox presents every day\u201d in the \u201cFox-uverse,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But his colleagues at CNN have used that exact phrase \u2014 and many worse ones \u2014 about former President Donald Trump, Trump administration officials, and Republican congressional leaders as recently as three days earlier:<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CNN senior media reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliverdarcy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@oliverdarcy<\/a> compares the way Fox reports crime in the US to an Instagram filter, saying the final product is distorted and &#8220;no longer reflects reality.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S9QcwZvLD2\">pic.twitter.com\/S9QcwZvLD2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reliable Sources (@ReliableSources) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReliableSources\/status\/1485326898498617350?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anderson Cooper (\u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d on January 20, 2022)<\/strong>: Anderson Cooper, who replaced Chris Cuomo as CNN\u2019s top-rated host, likened a report about the 2020 Trump campaign to a clown car last Thursday. \u201cIt\u2019s like a clown car on fire,\u201d Cooper <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kikimelendez\/status\/1484547274931847172\">said<\/a> in exasperation. \u2018Yeah,\u201d agreed a giggly Pamela Brown, CNN\u2019s senior Washington correspondent, who then <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/acd\/date\/2022-01-20\/segment\/01\">apologized<\/a> for being unable to respond to Cooper\u2019s next question. \u201cSorry, I was thinking about the clown car on fire analogy,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I bet the DOJ, the FBI and the CIA are still investigating DID TRUMP KNOW? \ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02 Like a clown car on fire&#8217;: Cooper reacts to Giuliani&#8217;s fake electors plot <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AC7hPwu0qD\">https:\/\/t.co\/AC7hPwu0qD<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YouTube?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kiki Melendez (@kikimelendez) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kikimelendez\/status\/1484547274931847172?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>John King (\u201cInside Politics\u201d on December 16, 2021)<\/strong>: John King used the analogy to make the first year of the Trump administration seem worse than Joe Biden\u2019s first year in office. King noted that Republicans faltered on their \u201ccentral promise\u201d to \u201crepeal and replace Obamacare\u201d in 2017, while Biden failed to pass the&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/whats-in-joe-bidens-build-back-better-act\">\u201cBuild Back Better\u201d act<\/a> in 2021. But at least last year, \u201cwe have not had the clown car routine that that was that debate\u201d over Obamacare, King <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/ip\/date\/2021-12-16\/segment\/01\">said<\/a>. Still, he considered Biden\u2019s inability to pass his signature social spending legislation as \u201ca major failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don Lemon (\u201cDon Lemon Tonight\u201d on November 29, 2021)<\/strong>: \u201cThe GOP is just a circus right now. That\u2019s just the honest truth. It\u2019s a clown show,\u201d Lemon <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/cnnt\/date\/2021-11-29\/segment\/01\">declared<\/a> last November. \u201cThe GOP is just loading up the clown car of their never-ending circus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anderson Cooper (\u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d on September 16, 2021)<\/strong>: Last fall, Anderson Cooper cited anti-Trump biographies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dem-congressman-blows-a-hole-in-bob-woodwards-new-book-peril\">\u201cPeril\u201d by Bob Woodward<\/a> as evidence the former president became mentally unhinged in his last days in office. \u201cI mean, we knew it was, you know, a clown car going on and possibly going off the cliff,\u201d Cooper <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/acd\/date\/2021-09-16\/segment\/01\">said<\/a>. \u201cBut I mean, it\u2019s extraordinary to see this reporting \u2026 Woodward and Costa also report on the former President\u2019s mental faculties.\u201d Cooper use the exact analogy which Stelter condemned Fox News for making. Stelter did not condemn Anderson Cooper for \u201cexaggerating\u201d or \u201cinventing\u201d concerns about President Trump\u2019s mental health, a frequent topic of CNN speculation since 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (\u201cDon Lemon Tonight\u201d on July 19, 2021<\/strong>): Not every use of this \u201cincendiary\u201d phrase came from one of CNN\u2019s anchors, but it sometimes came with their approval. During an interview with Don Lemon about the congressional committee investigating the January 6 riot, Rep.
