He said, quote, \u2018Today our partners are saying that war may start tomorrow if there was a powerful escalation on the Russian side and then there will be powerful sanctions applied.\u2019 The question is why are you not introducing sanctions now rather than waiting until after the escalation. What\u2019s your answer to that?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/let-me-back-up-winsome-sears-directly-challenges-dana-bash-claim-that-crt-is-not-in-virginia-curriculum\/\">Bash<\/a> asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, Dana, as I said, we are not waiting. We are doing a lot right now,\u201d Blinken insisted, saying that the United States was \u201ctaking the lead\u201d on coordinating what he said would be \u201cmassive consequences\u201d that would be implemented if Russia were to make a move against Ukraine in the coming days or weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ukraine we\u2019re providing \u2014 and last year alone provided more military assistance to Ukraine than any year in the past. We\u2019ve been going against those inside Ukraine trying to destabilize the government. We\u2019re taking concrete action,\u201d Blinken continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019re not imposing the sanctions?\u201d Bash pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to sanctions, the purpose of those sanctions is to deter Russian aggression. So if they\u2019re triggered now, you lose the deterrent effect,\u201d Blinken argued, saying that the coordination between the U.S. and European countries was \u201cdesigned to factor into President Putin\u2019s calculus and deter and dissuade them from taking aggressive action even as we pursue diplomacy at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blinken joined White House press secretary Jen Psaki in their efforts to clean up President Biden\u2019s comments from his Wednesday press conference, during which he appeared to suggest that the United States would only respond to a Russian incursion against Ukraine if it reached a certain threshold.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psaki-promises-us-will-respond-to-a-russian-military-incursion-in-ukraine-with-severe-economic-consequences\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI want to be very clear. The president has conveyed directly to President Putin if there is a movement of any military troops across the border, that is an invasion,\u201d Psaki replied, going on to say that in the event of an actual invasion the United States would respond with \u201csevere economic consequences.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf they go in, that is an invasion, and there will be severe economic consequences.
