Ateeq pled not guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Farooq met Ateeq online while participating in a multiplayer video game popular in Pakistan and continued to communicate with her afterward via WhatsApp.&nbsp;Ateeq wrote in an evidentiary statement to Rawalpindi\u2019s trial court that Farooq \u201cdeliberately pulled her into a religious discussion to frame her after she refused \u2018to be friendly\u2019 towards him,\u201d Al Jazeera relayed on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I feel that he intentionally dragged into this topic for revenge, that\u2019s why he got registered [sic] a case against me and during [WhatsApp] chat he collected everything that went against me,\u201d Ateeq alleged.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFarooq contends the accused shared the allegedly blasphemous material as a WhatsApp status and refused to delete it when he confronted her on that messaging platform,\u201d according to Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Adnan Mushtaq <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1670455\">issued<\/a>&nbsp;Ateeq a death sentence on Wednesday according to \u201cSection 295-C [blasphemy]\u201d of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPP), the Karachi-based newspaper <em>Dawn<\/em> reported on January 20. The&nbsp;Rawalpindi trial court additionally awarded Ateeq a 10-year prison sentence and a $283 fine according to \u201cSection 295-A [insulting religious belief]\u201d of the national penal code.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Mushtaq further convicted Ateeq of \u201cposing as [a] Muslim under Section 298 of the PPC and awarded [her a] three years sentence with Rs50,000 [$283] fine,\u201d <em>Dawn<\/em> reported. Ateeq received a separate seven-year prison sentence and another $283 fine on Wednesday for violating Section 11 of Pakistan\u2019s Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which pertains to \u201chate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[W]hoever prepares or disseminates information, through any information system or device, that advances or is likely to advance interfaith, sectarian or racial hatred, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years or with fine or with both,\u201d <em>Dawn<\/em> wrote of PECA Section 11.<\/p>\n<p>Islam is Pakistan\u2019s official state religion. Nearly 97 percent of people in Pakistan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalreligiousfutures.org\/countries\/pakistan#\/?affiliations_religion_id=0&amp;affiliations_year=2010&amp;region_name=All%20Countries&amp;restrictions_year=2016\">identify<\/a> as Muslim according to the country\u2019s latest available census data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.gov.pk\/content\/final-results-census-2017\">released<\/a> in 2017. Islam pervades practically all aspects of Pakistani daily life. The religion\u2019s supremacy over Pakistani culture is reflected by the nation\u2019s penal code, which assigns a maximum penalty of death for anyone found guilty of&nbsp;insulting Muhammad. Pakistan\u2019s blasphemy laws further empower state officials to imprison people for insulting Islam, the Quran (Islam\u2019s holy text), or any figure deemed holy by the religion.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s courts have yet to carry out capital punishment for people convicted of insulting Muhammad, though Ateeq\u2019s extreme sentence on January 20 joins a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/01\/05\/pakistan-sentences-pastor-serving-longest-ever-prison-sentence-blasphemy-death\/\">growing<\/a> list of blasphemy-related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2020\/09\/23\/lawyer-pakistani-christian-sentenced-death-blasphemy-just-refused-convert\/\">death sentences<\/a> meted out by the Pakistani justice system over the past year and a half.
