The two senators who voted against the legislation were David Blount and Hob Bryan \u2013 both of whom are white Democrats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2022\/01\/21\/dem-lawmakers-walk-out-during-vote-ban-critical-race-theory-mississippi\/\">according to<\/a> WLBT. The bill will now make its way to the state\u2019s House.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The proposed legislation <a href=\"http:\/\/billstatus.ls.state.ms.us\/documents\/2022\/pdf\/SB\/2100-2199\/SB2113CS.pdf\">states<\/a> in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>(1) No public institution of higher learning, community\/junior college, school district or public school, including public charter schools, shall direct or otherwise compel students to personally affirm, adopt or adhere to any of the following tenants:<\/p>\n<p>(a) That any sex, race, ethnicity, religion or national origin is inherently superior or inferior; or<\/p>\n<p>(b) That individuals should be adversely treated on the basis of their sex, race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prior to the walkout, Senate Minority Leader Derrick Simmons (D) questioned Sen. Michael McLendon (R), who introduced the bill. McLendon submitted he had not heard of an instance where Critical Race Theory was being taught in Mississippi but noted a large number of his constituents expressed concerns \u201c<span>over the teachings that they have heard from around the country.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWell, we try to make laws for the future as well as today,\u201d McLendon said towards the beginning of the exchange.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Simmons questioned McLendon about what the bill would mean for teachings of race and racism in schools going forward should it be signed into law.<\/p>\n<p>Watch Below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/supertalk\/videos\/452644769859047\/\" data-width=\"640\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/supertalk\/videos\/452644769859047\/\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<p>&#8220;All this bill does is say that no child is superior or inferior to another, that is all it does.&#8221; \u2013 Senator Michael McLendon. All this bill says \u2013 no child should be told that they\u2019re superior or inferior to another. That\u2019s all this bill does. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Simmons: So all the history in the state of Mississippi all the way up to the changing of the state flag \u2013 all of that can still be taught in our schools with the passage of this bill? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>McLendon: Yes sir. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Simmons: And how we got to the point we got to in 2020 when we changed the flag \u2013 we can also teach the true history about that in our schools if this bill becomes law?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>McLendon: That is my intent, yes sir. All this bill does is no child is superior or inferior to another and we should not teach that \u2013 that someone is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Simmons: The horrific thing that happened to Mamie Till\u2019s son \u2013 can we teach that in our schools with the passage of this bill? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>McLendon: Absolutely, I watched the movie last night as a matter of fact.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later in the session, Simmons requested a roll call before leading a walkout of black senators, according to WLBT.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cWe felt like it was a bill that was not deserving of our vote,\u201d said&nbsp; Simmons, according to Mississippi Today. \u201cWe have so many issues in the state that need to be addressed. We did not need to spend time on this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe walked out as a means to show a visible protest to these proceedings,\u201d said Democrat Sen. John Horhn.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Simmons released a statement that reads in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Senate Democrats have always led the charge on teacher pay raises and have championed establishment of fair career plans that show our appreciation for the job our teachers do. However, the roll call vote today to pass Senate Bill 2444 \u2013 our teacher pay plan \u2013 was quickly called up and passed without discussion immediately after members of our caucus walked out in protest of a vague bill that would ban \u201ccritical race theory\u201d in Mississippi\u2019s public schools and universities without creating boundaries. We felt it was unfair to have such a bill introduced or passed as it really demeans a large segment of our population. Though our votes were not counted because of the chain of events, Senate Democrats stand in support of raises for our educators.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m trying to find the mischief in this bill and I don\u2019t see it,\u201d said Republican Sen.
