A 14-ounce New York strip at The Palm, where Terry McAuliffe held his retirement party, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200918071847\/https:\/www.thepalm.com\/location\/the-palm-washington-dc\/#dinner-tpdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost<\/a> $54 in September 2020. It now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepalm.com\/location\/the-palm-washington-dc\/#dinner-tpdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goes<\/a> for $61.50. The signature duck at Falls Church\u2019s Peking Gourmet Inn, a favorite of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehook.com\/article\/food-drink-washington-dc\/where-presidents-dine-restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">both<\/a> Presidents Bush, cost <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200303203533\/https:\/www.pekinggourmet.com\/menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just<\/a> $50 in March 2020. Today, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pekinggourmet.com\/dinner-menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goes<\/a> for $66\u2014a 32 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants across the country have jacked up prices in recent months amid soaring inflation and staff shortages. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the cost of eating out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/cpi_12102021.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rose<\/a> 5.8 percent from 2020 to 2021, the highest increase since 1982. According to restaurant analysts, &#8220;annual menu inflation&#8221; generally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2021\/08\/nyc-restaurants-rising-prices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hovers<\/a> around 2.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The Bushes aren\u2019t the only presidents whose favorite menu items have gotten more expensive under Biden. Barack and Michelle Obama were known for their frequent date night visits to Rasika, the district\u2019s trendiest Indian joint. The restaurant\u2019s Palak Chaat jumped from $10 to $12, a 20 percent increase that might be due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifetoday.tamu.edu\/2021\/01\/26\/spinach-acres-down-quality-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent<\/a> spinach shortage.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2020, the costoletta di vitello at Filomena in Georgetown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz_photos\/filomena-ristorante-washington?select=kAoMgcZatUNKop5801JGUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went<\/a> for $49.95. Today, the 20-ounce veal chop at Bill Clinton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/filomena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Menu-Dinner-2021-USE-ME-07-30-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favorite<\/a> D.C. eatery will set you back $56.99. (Readers may recall the restaurant serving Clinton and the late German chancellor Helmut Kohl heaping bowls of pasta until they said stop. They didn&#8217;t.) Georgia Brown\u2019s, the downtown Southern hotspot frequented by Clinton staffers in the &#8217;90s, has seen its trademark buttermilk fried chicken jump from <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201026182445\/https:\/www.gbrowns.com\/menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$24<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbrowns.com\/menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$27<\/a>&nbsp;since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just high-end restaurants that have had to raise their prices. We The Pizza, a Beltway go-to to grab a slice, has <a href=\"https:\/\/wethepizza.com\/locations\/washington-dc#menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a> the price of each of its items <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201224074236\/https:\/wethepizza.com\/locations\/washington-dc#menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since<\/a> December 2020. A burrito at District Taco, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz_photos\/district-taco-washington-6?select=rwOM5rPlO-En3Y45klSgmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold<\/a> for just over $8 in March 2020, goes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.districttaco.com\/pages\/menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly<\/a> $10 as of this writing.<\/p>\n<p>The sticker shock comes as D.C. residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bare-shelves-biden-trends-near-top-of-twitter-as-users-highlight-supply-chain-crisis-apocalypse-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggle<\/a> to find groceries amid worsening supply chain crises. Unfortunately, anyone looking to take the edge off with a stiff drink could find themselves similarly strapped for cash. Sources tell the <em>Free Beacon <\/em>that the price of a squeeze bottle of liquor at Adams Morgan\u2019s notorious Dan&#8217;s Cafe rose from $25 in March 2020 to $30 in March 2021. The cheapest happy hour beer at the newly reopened Post Pub, which once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz_photos\/post-pub-washington?select=DxIn0dXKuzJpy-5LE2yHQA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered<\/a> daily $3.95 beer specials, <a href=\"http:\/\/postpubdc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PostPubLTR_111221_1434.pdf\">goes<\/a> for $5. Democracy dies in dark amber.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, one popular D.C. restaurant seems to have escaped the perils of inflation. Le Diplomate, the French bistro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2021\/05\/31\/president-biden-vp-harris-dine-at-le-diplomate-on-memorial-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frequented<\/a> by Joe and Dr. Jill Biden has managed to keep prices stable for the past few years.
