Friday\u2019s launch of coordinated naval exercises between the three nations marks their third such joint venture. Tehran\u2019s participation in the 2022 Marine Security Belt Exercise signals an \u201cimprovement of the Islamic Republic\u2019s standing in the world,\u201d Iranian Rear Admiral Tajoldini told IRNA on January 21.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s 15-year-long bid to gain full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) came to fruition in September 2021 when the security bloc announced it had formally accepted Tehran\u2019s application to become a full member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accession process is expected to take up to two years to complete,\u201d the Middle East Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mei.edu\/publications\/what-will-sco-membership-mean-iran\">noted<\/a> of Iran\u2019s SCO admittance at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Observers consider the SCO an eastern counterweight to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO.). Russia and China lead the SCO as a security alliance that also organizes economic and political cooperation between its member states. The SCO has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/15\/global-times-iran-likely-gain-admittance-sco-near-future\/\">limited<\/a> Iran\u2019s access to the SCO since 2005 by granting the Islamic Republic a lesser \u201cobserver\u201d status.
