Ted Cruz (R-TX).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Biden\u2019s Democrat Party used a filibuster to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/14\/democrats-use-dreaded-filibuster-to-block-ted-cruz-bill-sanctioning-russias-pipeline\/\"><span>block<\/span><\/a><span> the bill last week, at the same time they were denouncing the filibuster as an instrument of white supremacy and obstructionism. Skeptical observers also pointed out that Democrats seemed awfully eager to protect Russian leader Vladimir Putin\u2019s big money-making pipeline after years of howling about \u201cRussian collusion\u201d as the ultimate sin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI just want to make this clear. As a country that is building a powerful economy and undergoing reforms, I support imposing sanctions now. I asked one leader: \u2018Why do you support sanctions against Russia in case there is an invasion into Ukraine? If there is an invasion by Russia, do you introduce powerful sanctions after we might have already lost several territories? (BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Zelensky agreed with the <\/span><i><span>Washington Post\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span>observation that Russia could be ready to \u201ctough out\u201d sanctions imposed after an invasion begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cExactly. So once you introduce even powerful sanctions, they will look at you and say, \u2018Listen, we can deal with this, we can continue as it was.\u2019 I think this is wrong,\u201d the Ukrainian president said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Zelensky apparently disagreed with Germany for ruling out one particularly potent action: sanctions that would block Russia from using the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) global payment system.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI cannot see why the world should not be united regarding the introduction of sanctions,\u201d Zelensky remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SWIFT is a network employed for money transfers by almost all of the world\u2019s major financial institutions. Severing Russia\u2019s links to SWIFT would be one of the toughest possible punitive actions, the \u201cnuclear option,\u201d as <\/span><span>Radio Free Europe<\/span><span> (RFE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/russia-swift-nuclear-option\/31601868.html\">described<\/a> it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The only SWIFT disconnection to date occurred in 2012 when Iran was locked out of the network, but Iran was not extensively utilizing SWIFT at the time, so the impact was relatively minor. Russia would probably feel considerably more pain, perhaps enough to trigger a nationwide financial collapse, although RFE speculated Europe is so hungry for Russian oil and natural gas that an alternative payment system would probably be cobbled together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some German officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-russia-swift\/west-no-longer-mulling-cutting-off-russia-from-swift-handelsblatt-idUSKBN2JR1LJ\"><span>say<\/span><\/a><span> SWIFT sanctions against Russia have not been fully ruled out, and the Biden White House implied they could still be among the \u201csevere consequences for Russia if it further invades Ukraine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Zelensky <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/ukraines-zelensky-asks-preemptive-russia-004140053.html\"><span>asked<\/span><\/a><span> Biden for preemptive sanctions against Russia in a December 9 telephone conversation, including action against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which Zelensky <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20210822-nord-stream-2-dangerous-geopolitical-weapon-zelensky\"><span>denounced<\/span><\/a><span> over the summer as a \u201cdangerous geopolitical weapon of the Kremlin.\u201d His request for sanctions was ignored by Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday asked for the Biden administration to impose sanctions on Russia immediately, rather than waiting for a Russian attack on his country.
