The statement was one of numerous grammatical and factual errors made by Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones (D) on \u201cThe ReidOut with Joy Reid\u201d Thursday night as he condemned DeSantis\u2019 efforts to have the state\u2019s public schools focus on the basics, like math and English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be extremely clear about\u00a0something:\u00a0As a former teacher, I want to\u00a0make it clear that these\u00a0children are more smarter [sic] than\u00a0we think they are,\u201d Jones said, as Reid nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Jones claimed that DeSantis \u201cis not dealing with the things that is [sic] more important, the kitchen table issues,\u201d like \u201cthe up in rent that has taken place in South Florida,\u201d apparently referring to rent increases. \u201cBut yet, and still, we\u2019re dealing with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-is-critical-race-theory-breaking-down-the-ideology-thats-hitting-schools-across-the-country\">Critical Race Theory<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2020\/05\/the-1619-projection-3-lies-pulitzer-should-not-reward\/\">The\u00a01619 Project<\/a>, an issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/here-are-5-ways-the-media-is-trying-to-mislead-you-on-critical-race-theory\">that is a non-issue<\/a>.\u201d Jones did not discuss his own history as the primary sponsor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.watchtheyard.com\/alphas\/alpha-phi-alpha-shevrin-jones\/\">legislation<\/a> to remove all Confederate statues and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/florida-city-council-removes-confederate-street-paul-bois\">erase the name of all Confederate soldiers<\/a> from public property statewide.<\/p>\n<p>Reid, who has dedicated numerous segments over the past week to the Florida governor, invited Jones to critique DeSantis for removing CRT from the state\u2019s curriculum and supporting a bill that would stop teachers from discussing sexually explicit material in the classroom. Jones opposed the bill, which would prevent elementary school teachers from discussing sexual orientation or gender fluidity with children as young as 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, parents could sue if they believe a school\u2019s procedures are infringing on their fundamental rights to make decisions about education,\u201d Reid said, summarizing the bill. \u201cHow is that freedom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, not freedom,\u201d replied Jones, starting to call Ron DeSantis \u201cpresident\u201d before correcting himself. \u201cPresident \u2014Governor DeSantis, he calls this\u00a0the free state of Florida, but\u00a0it\u2019s not the free state of\u00a0Florida.\u00a0The governor is trying to not\u00a0just censor how you teach black\u00a0history, but he is also trying\u00a0to censor whether or not teachers can say the word \u2018gay\u2019\u00a0in our classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill in question (SB 1834) does not ban people from uttering the word \u201cgay\u201d in school, nor prevent children from having spontaneous conversations about any topic. This was directed to make whites not feel bad about what happened years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also accused DeSantis of spouting \u201cracist rhetoric.\u201d\u00a0An AP employee later approached the governor\u2019s office for comment, stating, \u201cI asked Sen. Jones if he thought Gov. DeSantis is racist. He said his policies are. Do you have a comment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to clarify \u2013 that you, without any context, asked a sitting State Senator if the Governor of Florida is a racist, while on the clock, being paid by the Associated Press?\u201d replied Communications Director Taryn Fenske.
