While Australia quarantines close contacts who test <em>negative <\/em>for the virus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/viral-tyranny-the-worlds-most-oppressive-covid-19-policies\">fenced camps<\/a> and Austria prepares to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/austrias-vaccination-mandate-to-apply-from-february-1\/\">mandate vaccination<\/a> for all adults on February 1, Sweden has spent two years informing its citizens on best practices \u2014 and respecting them to observe them. Throughout Sweden, schools have remained open, public health police have been absent from public life, and masks are virtually nowhere to be found. Supporters held Sweden up as a model for enlightened statesmanship; opponents worried the policy would turn the nation into a Scandinavian slaughterhouse. How have those measures fared compared to other nations?<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did Sweden respond to COVID-19?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the outset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Sweden\u2019s top health official, state epidemiologist Dr. Anders Tegnell, encouraged citizens to wash their hands regularly, observe social distancing, and limit contact with other people. Those who could worked from home. But Swedish police handed out virtually no citations to anyone caught violating his stipulations; Sweden trusted its citizens to do what is in their best interests.<\/p>\n<p>Given the limited threat posed to schoolchildren, Sweden\u2019s schools remained open for students through age 16. Secondary schools and universities switched to remote learning \u2014&nbsp;but by June 15, 2020 the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.se\/articles\/2020\/06\/minister-for-education-on-the-swedish-decision-to-not-close-down-schools\/\">announced<\/a> \u201cthat upper secondary schools can return to regular instruction on the school premises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the government not mandate that people wear face masks, but some cities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.co.uk\/951949\/why-swedish-towns-banning-face-masks-slow-vaccine-rollout\">temporarily banned<\/a> the use of masks and PPE. While its neighbors had temporary government lockdowns, Sweden never closed down businesses or public life.<\/p>\n<p>Tegnell and other state authorities crafted the policies with the foresight that politicians could not legislate the COVID-19 pandemic out of existence in 15 days. \u201cWe will have the virus in our societies \u2014 nationally, globally \u2014 for many years. How are we going to live our lives for such a long time \u2014 and not just surviving, but living?\u201d Sweden\u2019s Health Minister, Lena Hallengren, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0xLjSMuROgk\">told <\/a>France 24 news. \u201cI think that has been very crucial for the authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some cite the fact that on January 12 the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.se\/articles\/2022\/01\/stricter-infection-control-measures-to-be-introduced-on-12-january-2022\/\">reduced<\/a> the number of people allowed to attend private gatherings from 50 to 20 as proof that the Swedish approach failed. What do the data say?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were the results?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All in all, Sweden\u2019s COVID-19 results remain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/so-was-sweden-a-covid-success-or-failure\/2021\/10\/14\/fe2747f6-2cb8-11ec-b17d-985c186de338_story.html\">firmly in the middle<\/a> of the global pandemic, without many of the harms caused by overly zealous attempts to lock up Americans, of all ages and health statuses, in their homes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Voluntarily compliance<\/em>: Even without the threat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libertarianism.org\/topics\/coercion\">government force and coercion<\/a>, Swedes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-53498133\">voluntarily reduced<\/a> their social interactions by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/well-being\/prevention-cures\/510922-the-problem-with-holding-up-sweden-as-an-example\">70%<\/a>, according to Tegnell. Trusting citizens to govern themselves worked especially well in Sweden, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/trust\">high-trust society<\/a> that values <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/10\/05\/sweden-and-the-world-historical-power-of-conformity\/\">conformity<\/a> of action.<\/p>\n<p><em>Economy<\/em>: Sweden\u2019s economy contracted by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.MKTP.KD.ZG\">2.9%<\/a><\/strong> in 2020, less than half the rate of decline suffered by the European Union as a whole (6.0%) or the United Kingdom, and less than the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><em>Children\u2019s health<\/em>: \u201cClosure or not of schools has had little if any impact on the number of laboratory confirmed cases in school aged children in Finland and Sweden,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se\/publicerat-material\/publikationsarkiv\/c\/covid-19-in-schoolchildren\/\">found<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se\/contentassets\/c1b78bffbfde4a7899eb0d8ffdb57b09\/covid-19-school-aged-children.pdf\">study<\/a> from Sweden\u2019s Public Health Agency of Sweden (the Folkh\u00e4lsomyndigheten, or FoHM) in July 2020 \u2014 an assessment that held steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite Sweden\u2019s having kept schools and preschools open, we found a low incidence of severe Covid-19 among schoolchildren and children of preschool age during\u201d the first year of the pandemic in 2020, a group of Swedish scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc2026670\">wrote<\/a> to the New England Journal of Medicine. \u201cAmong the 1.95 million children who were 1 to 16 years of age, 15 children had Covid-19, [Multisystem inflammatory syndrome], or both conditions and were admitted to an ICU, which is equal to 1 child in 130,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That amounts to 0.0000077% of Sweden\u2019s children. There have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1107913\/number-of-coronavirus-deaths-in-sweden-by-age-groups\/\">15 deaths<\/a> of children under the age of 20 (birth through 19), as of January 10, 2022.<\/p>\n<p><em>Death rate<\/em>: Sweden\u2019s current <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/data\/mortality\">COVID-19 death rate<\/a> (151.91 per 100,000) is worse than Germany (139.92) but better than countries with much harsher lockdown policies, including the United States (261.32), Italy (235.84), the UK (229.49), and France (191.83).<\/p>\n<p>Sweden\u2019s COVID-19 death toll actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9855651\/Mask-free-Sweden-close-ZERO-daily-Covid-deaths.html\">fell to statistical zero<\/a> (less than one death on average for two weeks) from mid-July to early August. The United States had 329 deaths a day during the same period; the UK averaged 74 deaths a day.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mental health<\/em>: Unlike the United States, where attempted suicides among teenage girls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/11\/suicide-attempts-among-young-girls-surge-by-more-than-50percent-during-pandemic-cdc-says-.html\">rose 51%<\/a> during the pandemic, Sweden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/529034\/sweden-suicide-rate\/\">suicide rate<\/a> remained essentially unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><em>Social cohesion<\/em>: Swedes seem happier with their COVID-19 regimen than citizens of other nations, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-thousands-protest-against-covid-measures\/a-60270076\">thousands of Germans<\/a> who closed out 2021 by protesting in the streets against the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/omicron-germany-to-limit-private-gatherings-after-christmas\/a-60206476\">tightening<\/a> of public health restrictions. Swedes have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/hundreds-gather-illegal-covid-19-182558692.html\">mostly<\/a> eschewed the kinds of anti-lockdown protests have taken place everywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/news\/3-12106388\">Finland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/protest-in-netherlands-against-coronavirus-measures\/ar-AASPLj7\">the Netherlands<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/568843-hundreds-arrested-in-anti-lockdown-protests-in-australia\">Australia<\/a> to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps no nation has respected its citizens\u2019 freedom during the COVID-19 pandemic more than Sweden.
