The experience left him feeling grateful for where he\u2019s been and where he landed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy I lived the life that I lived because I have no regrets, but I was super ready to coach Little League, carve pumpkins on Halloween, read books and serve hot lunch on Wednesdays,\u201d the \u201cParks &amp; Rec\u201d actor told People for their cover story. \u201cI really, really loved every minute of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until I turned 26, I spent all my time investing in my career,\u201d Lowe continued. \u201cFrom 26 on, I\u2019ve invested in me; my spirituality, my recovery, my marriage, my family. A lot of it has been, excuse me, f***ing hard. And no one has a perfect life\u2026 but I\u2019m grateful for all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor started gaining recognition after appearing in \u201cThe Outsiders\u201d in 1983. He became super famous after starring in the 1985 cult classic \u201cSt. Elmo\u2019s Fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAbout Last Night\u201d alum admitted he didn\u2019t handle the newfound fame well. \u201cI became so identified with it \u2014 the wild, fun, rock and roll, quasi-debauched with the heart of gold [guy]: that\u2019s my early twenties in a nutshell,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And while drinking and partying, Lowe recalls hitting rock bottom. When he was 26, Lowe got home after a night of partying to a message on his answering machine where his mother begged him to pick up because his grandfather had a heart attack. But the actor ignored her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember going into the bathroom, looking at myself in the mirror and my thought process was, \u2018You need to drink directly from this bottle of Cuervo Gold so you can go to sleep, so you can wake up, so you can deal with this,&#8217;\u201d Lowe told People.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of all the things that had gone on in my life, that was the thing where finally I went, \u2018This is no way to live,\u2019\u201d he continued. \u201cI went to rehab 48 hours later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a dark time in his life but has ultimately led to the \u201cBrothers &amp; Sisters\u201d star feeling grateful for the little things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never been happier, personally or professionally [and] there\u2019s not a day that goes by where I\u2019m not thankful about it all,\u201d the actor said. \u201cI have gratitude and profound humility for the gifts that I\u2019ve been given, and worked for, in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lowe has been married to makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff since 1991 after meeting her on a blind date in 1983.
