They are for sensors to help with proper sealing and artwork placement during manufacturing, according to spokespeople for toothpaste producers.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=5130016100355646&amp;set=a.187767937913845&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image<\/a> shows three tubes of toothpaste each with small, colored bars at the end of the tube. In the image, the colored bars are circled. \u201cThe secrets of the colors in #toothpaste,\u201d the caption reads. \u201cThese colors are not for decoration, but the materials that were used to produce this paste.\u201d&nbsp; The caption then suggests what each color bar means, with green allegedly indicating \u201c100%\u201d natural ingredients and black supposedly meaning chemicals are present.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is false. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgate.com\/en-us\/oral-health\/selecting-dental-products\/what-is-a-toothpaste-color-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWhat is a Toothpaste Color Code?\u201d page<\/a> on Colgate\u2019s website explains that the colored bars are actually meant to \u201chelp in the manufacturing of the toothpaste tubes by telling light sensors where the end of the tube is so that it can be cut and sealed properly.\u201d The page further notes that the \u201ccolor-coding system simply doesn\u2019t exist\u201d and that toothpaste producers \u201cdon\u2019t mark their toothpastes with colored squares to try to trick consumers and hide ingredients from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for GSK, which manufactures Sensodyne toothpaste, said in an email to Check Your Fact that the bars \u201care for artwork alignment on our production lines and do not indicate what materials are used in the product.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/12\/03\/fact-check-colosseum-carved-real-tooth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, This Image Does Not Show The Colosseum Carved Into A Real Tooth)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Velvet Gogol Bennett, a spokesperson for Procter &amp; Gamble, which manufactures Crest toothpaste, also debunked the claim in an email to Check Your Fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis topic has been circling the internet over the years and it is not true,\u201d Bennett said, directing interested users to <a href=\"http:\/\/smartlabel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">smartlabel.com<\/a> for information about the company\u2019s toothpaste ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>In some instances, tubes may use different coloring aside from the four main colors to correspond with other sensors or machines, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/toothpaste-color-code#toothpaste-color-codes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthline<\/a>.
