\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the right to abortion to be added to the EU\u2019s Charter of Fundamental Rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right to abortion\u201d should be added to the EU\u2019s legally binding Charter of Fundamental Rights, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Macron\u2019s suggestion \u2014 which will no doubt raise the ire of Malta, Poland and Hungary \u2014 comes shortly after&nbsp;Roberta Metsola, a pro-life MEP, was elected President of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/election-presidentielle-2022\/article\/2022\/01\/19\/au-parlement-europeen-les-ambitions-d-emmanuel-macron-croisent-la-campagne-presidentielle-francaise_6110127_6059010.html\">report<\/a> by&nbsp;<em>Le Monde<\/em>, Macron suggests that the right should be added to the charter, along with references to environmental protection, in order to better defend the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years after the proclamation of our Charter of Fundamental Rights, which notably enshrined the abolition of the death penalty throughout the Union, I hope that we can update this charter, notably to be more explicit on environmental protection or the recognition of the right to abortion,\u201d Macron told the EU Parliament in Strassbourg on Wednesday, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/250138\/french-president-emmanuel-macron-calls-for-abortion-to-be-added-to-eu-rights-charter#.YegsDXIVSg0.twitter\">translation<\/a> published by Catholic News Agency.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLet us open this debate freely with our fellow citizens of great European conscience to give new life to our set of rights that forges this Europe strong in its values, the only future of our common political project,\u201d the French President added.<\/p>\n<p>The suggestion was reportedly met with applause from parliamentarians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfmtv.com\/politique\/macron-veut-inscrire-l-ivg-dans-la-charte-europeenne-des-droits-fondamentaux_AV-202201190233.html\">according<\/a> to French broadcaster the parliament\u2019s new president, the Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/macron-wants-new-euro-russian-security-negotiation\/\">Politico<\/a> and&nbsp;<em>El Pais<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2022-01-19\/macron-apuesta-por-incluir-el-aborto-en-la-carta-de-derechos-fundamentales-de-la-ue.html\">pointed<\/a> towards Metsola\u2019s pro-life views as being the origin point of Macron\u2019s remarks, despite Metsola herself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/01\/18\/roberta-metsola-on-abortion-my-position-is-the-european-parliament-s-position\">committing<\/a> to respect the majority position of the parliament, regardless of her own beliefs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><em>El Pais&nbsp;<\/em>also <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2022-01-19\/macron-apuesta-por-incluir-el-aborto-en-la-carta-de-derechos-fundamentales-de-la-ue.html\">notes<\/a> that the suggestion will also likely not go down well with Malta and Poland, which both have strict laws against abortion, as well as some eastern bloc states, such as Hungary and Romania, who are wary of the increasing power Brussels has over the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>The legally binding document also requires unanimous agreement from all member states in order for modifications to be made, making it likely that Macron\u2019s aim for abortion to be added to the document will be an uphill battle.<\/p>\n<p>Macron\u2019s comments come as France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/01\/01\/german-government-to-support-france-in-making-european-union-more-sovereign\/\">assumes<\/a> the presidency of the European Union, a position it will hold until July.<\/p>\n<p>High on Emmanuel Macron\u2019s agenda during this time is reportedly increasing the bloc\u2019s power on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to get \u2026 a powerful Europe in the world, fully sovereign, free to make its choices and master of its own destiny,\u201d Macron said regarding his vision for the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s new government has promised its full support in this endeavour, its coalition agreement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/29\/germany-incoming-leftist-coalition-govt-to-push-for-an-eu-superstate\/\">mandating<\/a>&nbsp;officials to move the bloc towards the \u201cfederalisation\u201d of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur French friends can count on our support from the first to the last day to lay the right foundations within the EU: for a sustainable economic recovery, in the fight against the climate crisis, in digitization and for a more sovereign Europe in the world,\u201d <a
