His solo press conference today was his first in ten months.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>The fear, of course, was that Biden would say something stupid\u2014and that\u2019s exactly what he did. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Asked about Putin\u2019s plans toward Ukraine, Biden answered, \u201cMy guess is he will move in, he has to do something.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"video-src-attr\">C-SPAN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Immediately, CNN reporter Kylie Atwood<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kylieatwood\/status\/1483917440975355914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">tweeted<\/a> the president\u2019s words, adding a siren emoji and the context: \u201cPresident Biden says on Putin &amp; a possible invasion into Ukraine.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yes, Biden\u2019s comment certainly rated a big fat siren, because it\u2019s not often that a U.S. president predicts that an adversary will attack an American ally. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8&#8221;My guess is he will move in, he has to do something,\u201d President Biden says on Putin &amp; a possible invasion into Ukraine. Biden also says he is not sure Putin is certain what he is going to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kylie Atwood (@kylieatwood) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kylieatwood\/status\/1483917440975355914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 19, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To be sure, Biden indicated that he was against Russia attacking Ukraine, and yet at the same time, over the course of a two-hour session with the press\u2014he obviously enjoys being off the leash\u2014the president telegraphed to Putin that he was willing to split hairs, that he might not call a spade a spade: \u201dIt\u2019s one thing if it\u2019s a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do,\u201d he told reporters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>In other words, maybe an <i>incursion<\/i> is okay, but not an <i>invasion<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Got that? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTomCotton\/status\/1483928732972859394\">summed it up<\/a>: \u201cJoe Biden\u2019s impotence emboldened Vladimir Putin and now he just green-lighted Putin to invade Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Biden\u2019s impotence emboldened Vladimir Putin and now he just green-lighted Putin to invade Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Cotton (@SenTomCotton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTomCotton\/status\/1483928732972859394?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 19, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Politico<\/i> reporter Alex Ward, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexbward\/status\/1483942845396537351\">added<\/a> of the Ukrainian government: \u201cSource close to Zelensky admin on Biden\u2019s Russia\/Ukraine remarks: \u2018The fallout [in Kyiv] will be nuclear.\u2019\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Doing her best at damage control, White House press secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/01\/19\/statement-from-press-secretary-jen-psaki-on-russian-aggression-towards-ukraine\/?utm_source=twitter\">rushed<\/a> out a \u201cclarification\u201d:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>President Biden has been clear with the Russian President: If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that\u2019s a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our Allies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In point of fact, Biden hadn\u2019t been clear at all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s what happens when you talk for two hours: you meander around.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>And that goes double if you\u2019re Biden.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The<i> Washington Post<\/i>\u2019s Aaron Blake was gentle on the 46th president, and yet even the <i>Post<\/i>-man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/19\/takeaways-biden-news-conference\/\">conceded<\/a> that Biden\u2019s words \u201cseemed to suggest that maybe Russia could go into Ukraine without much in the way of a response, as long as it wasn\u2019t a fuller invasion.\u201d The reporter added, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t long ago the Russia annexed Crimea; would something like that be considered a \u2018minor incursion\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So yes, Jen Psaki and all the rest of Team Biden can and will issue more clarifications, and yet the plain fact is that they won\u2019t be able to clear up the mush in Biden\u2019s head.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>And so the world waits in wonder: What will Putin and his Russian armed forces do next?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>And how will Biden react? (FPG\/Hulton Archive\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking back upon U.S. history, it\u2019s hard to think of an exact parallel to what just happened with Biden\u2014to a time when an American president seemed almost to invite an attack.
