Or not take off at all,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2021\/12\/21\/5-g-phones-airplanes-flight-delays-faa\/8947513002\/\">USA Today<\/a> explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll be forced to divert the flight to an airport that is not 5G-covered,\u201d said Robert Mann, president of the aviation-industry consulting firm R.W. Mann. &amp; Co. \u201cOr you\u2019ll have to not dispatch the plane.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In October 2020, Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SC-239-5G-Interference-Assessment-Report_274-20-PMC-2073_accepted_changes.pdf\">report<\/a> that provided clear indication \u201cthat the risk will be widespread and has the potential for broad impacts to aviation operations in the United States, including the possibility of catastrophic failures leading to multiple fatalities, in the absence of appropriate mitigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is the aerospace industry saying?<\/p>\n<p>Boeing and Airbus Americas<\/p>\n<p>Both Dave Calhoun, Chief Executive of Boeing, and Jeffrey Knittel, the CEO of Airbus Americas, have urged the Biden administration to delay the rollout of 5G.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Boeing said the aerospace industry was \u201cfocused on fully evaluating and addressing the potential for 5G interference with radio altimeters,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/12\/21\/1066240779\/boeing-airbus-5g-wireless-delay-aircraft-safety-concerns\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are collaborating with aviation authorities, government leaders, airlines, and industry groups to ensure the continued operational safety of aircraft throughout the aviation system worldwide,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c5G interference could adversely affect the ability of aircraft to safely operate,\u201d Calhoun and Knittel asked U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a letter, adding it could have \u201can enormous negative impact on the aviation industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United Airlines<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s any kind of weather, if there\u2019s high winds, if the visibility isn\u2019t good because of smog, you can\u2019t use that equipment,\u201d United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/airlines-brace-for-flight-restrictions-in-5g-standoff-11639929603\">said<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t land at airports \u2014 at Chicago O\u2019Hare, at Atlanta, at Detroit \u2014 just think about what that means. This cannot be the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Airlines for America<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies,\u201d wrote the chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and others in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/airlines-warn-of-major-disruption-if-5g-deployment-continues-will-cause-a-completely-avoidable-economic-calamity\">letter<\/a> to U.S. aviation authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The airline leaders then explained that \u201c[t]he harm that will result from deployment on January 19 is substantially worse than we originally anticipated for two key reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trilogy of delays<\/p>\n<p>In response to concerns over safety, Verizon and AT&amp;T have delayed the rollout of 5G on three occasions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On November 4, 2021, Verizon and AT&amp;T <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/att-verizon-delay-c-band-spectrum-use-pending-air-safety-review-2021-11-04\/\">agreed<\/a> to \u201cdelay by a month the commercial launch of C-band wireless service pending an assessment of any impact on aviation safety technologies,\u201d with the launch pushed to January 5, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>On January 4, 2022, shortly after refusing a last-minute federal request, AT&amp;T and Verizon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/att-verizon-postpone-5g-rollout-near-airports-amid-pressure-from-government-aviation-officials\">agreed<\/a> to postpone the rollout of 5G technology near airports by two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>And on January 18, 2022, in another eleventh-hour move, Verizon and AT&amp;T <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/verizon-and-att-voluntarily-limit-5g-near-airports-to-avoid-flight-chaos-americans-have-been-clamoring-for-5g-and-tomorrow-we-will-deliver-it\">agreed<\/a> to temporarily limit some 5G services in the vicinity of key airports.<\/p>\n<p>Flight cancellations<\/p>\n<p>Emirates Airlines<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to operational concerns associated with the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the US at certain airports, Emirates will be suspending flights to the following US destinations from 19 January 2022 until further notice: Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Houston (IAH), Miami (MIA), Newark (EWR), Orlando (MCO), San Francisco (SFO) and Seattle (SEA),\u201d the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emirates.com\/us\/english\/help\/travel-updates\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Japan Airlines<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoeing has notified us that 5G signals for U.S. mobile phones, which will begin operating in the U.S. on January 19, 2022, may interfere with the radio wave altimeter installed on the Boeing 777,\u201d the airline <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByERussell\/status\/1483518596722614278\">announced<\/a>. \u201cWe have decided not to use this aircraft-type on the U.S. mainland routes until safety is confirmed, and we regret to cancel the flight that cannot be changed to Boeing 787.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ANA<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the launch of 5G service in the U.S. on Wednesday, January 19, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has indicated that radio waves from the 5G wireless service may interfere with aircraft altimeters,\u201d the airline <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByERussell\/status\/1483519092912971781\">announced<\/a>. \u201cAs a result, Boeing has announced flight restrictions on all airlines operating the Boeing 777 aircraft, and we have canceled or changed the aircraft for some flights to\/from the U.S. based on the announcement by Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Air India<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to deployment of 5G communications in USA,&nbsp; our operations to USA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In recent months, chaos has erupted between telecom giants Verizon and AT&#038;T and the U.S. aviation industry over the safety implications of their latest 5G technology.
