Since 1976, they\u2019ve released 14 studio albums and performed hundreds of live concerts, and have sold millions of records worldwide. It\u2019s not an exaggeration to call the band one of the most influential artists of all time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the kind of lifelong success that most recording artists can only dream of, but during a recent interview, lead vocalist Bono made some disparaging remarks about his band, dissing everything from the group\u2019s name to specific songs they\u2019ve put out.<\/p>\n<p>The 61-year-old rocker, whose real name is Paul David Hewson, shared his true feelings during an episode of The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s \u201cAwards Chatter\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/bono-and-the-edge-sing-2\/id1039032256?i=1000548166233\">podcast<\/a> along with fellow bandmate the Edge.<\/p>\n<p>Bono claimed he was never fully supportive of the band\u2019s name. He credited U2\u2019s first manager, Paul McGuinness, who told them the name idea was \u201cgreat\u201d plus would \u201clook good on a T-shirt; a letter and a number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The singer still regrets going along with the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t realize that The Beatles was a bad pun, either,\u201d he said. \u201cIn our head, it was like the spy plane, U-boat. It was futuristic \u2026 It turned out to imply this kind of acquiescence. No, I don\u2019t like that name. I still don\u2019t really like the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the band\u2019s style has evolved over the years, with early songs drawing inspiration from the post-punk genre. Most of their lyrics include spiritual imagery and deal with social issues and even political themes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1980s, critics had called U2 \u201cthe greatest rock band in the world,\u201d but Bono seems to disagree that U2\u2019s music is worth celebrating. During the same \u201cAwards Chatter\u201d interview, the Irish rocker said he actually doesn\u2019t like hearing their songs on the radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in the car when one of our songs has come on the radio and I\u2019ve been the color of, as we say in Dublin, scarlet,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just so embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one that I can listen to the most is \u2018Miss Sarajevo\u2019 with Luciano Pavarotti,\u201d Bono continued. \u201cGenuine, most of the other ones make me cringe a little bit.\u201d The lead singer also said that the song he\u2019s \u201cprobably proudest\u201d of is \u201cVertigo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not that the singer is putting blame on his bandmates. Instead, he blames his own singing ability \u2013 or lack thereof \u2013 for part of U2 being so terrible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only became a singer, like, recently. Maybe it hasn\u2019t happened yet for some people\u2019s ears and I understand that,\u201d he told THR.<\/p>\n<p>He recounted how singer Robert Palmer told U2 bassist Adam Clayton in the 1980s, \u201cGod, would you ever tell your singer to just take down the keys a little bit? He\u2019d do himself a favor, his voice a favor, and he\u2019d do us all a favor who have to listen to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now Bono sees what Clayton was talking about. \u201cI was thinking out of my body. I wasn\u2019t thinking about singing,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t really think about changing keys.
