Investors deployed another $14.7B in Q4 with Infrastructure investments focused on Manufacturing and Components ($1.9B) and Application investments focused on Location-based Services, with emphasis on Delivery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The United States significantly leads the rest of the world in many investment categories, including 67% of total infrastructure investment. However, American investment in applications only slightly leads Chinese investment \u2014 accounting for 40% and 36% of the international total, respectively. Overall, 2021 saw a $46.3 billion capital inflow to the space industry \u2014 a \u201crecord year for investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among American rocket companies, SpaceX \u2014 the venture founded by Elon Musk \u2014 made several strides in 2021. SpaceX is preparing to launch Starship \u2014 the vessel that will eventually carry astronauts to Mars \u2014 into orbit. Equipped with 29 Raptor engines and standing at 400 feet tall, Starship is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\">able<\/a> to carry over 220,000 pounds into space.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-elon-musk-unveils-massive-new-device-for-catching-rockets-from-space\">shared<\/a> a video of a tower designed to catch Starship upon its return to the earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Starship launch &amp; catch tower <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5mLIQwwu0k\">pic.twitter.com\/5mLIQwwu0k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1480326831031173124?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In December, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/spacex-has-begun-constructing-starship-launchpad-in-florida-says-elon-musk\">unveiled<\/a> another stage of the Starship project \u2014 the modification of Pad 39A in Florida, which once served as the launch point for NASA\u2019s Apollo missions. \u201cConstruction of Starship orbital launch pad at the Cape has begun,\u201d Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1466797158737268743?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1466797158737268743%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnbc.com%2F2021%2F12%2F03%2Felon-musk-spacex-starts-construction-of-starship-launchpad-in-florida.html\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c39A is hallowed spaceflight ground \u2014 no place more deserving of a Starship launch pad!\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1466851970443010056\">added<\/a>. \u201cWill have similar, but improved, ground systems &amp; tower to Starbase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other private space companies sent their first tourism flights into space. In July, Virgin Galactic carried a small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/branson-wins-billionaire-space-race-hits-53-miles-above-earth-in-rocket-plane\">crew<\/a> of civilians \u2014 including Richard Branson, the company\u2019s founder \u2014 53 miles above the Earth on a rocket-powered plane. Days later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/billionaire-bezos-blasts-into-space-soars-to-66-5-miles-high-lands-safely-back-on-earth\">mission<\/a> followed suit.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond private ventures, world governments are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-billionaire-space-race-and-the-brewing-interstellar-cold-war\">competing<\/a> with one another for supremacy in space.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, China\u2019s Chang\u2019e-5 landed on earth after collecting 4.4 pounds of lunar rocks \u2014 continuing research started by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. China is now developing new launch vehicles and a new spacecraft that can send astronauts to the moon, with the intent to set foot on the lunar surface in less than ten years.<\/p>\n<p>Russia and China are partnering to accomplish several joint missions \u2014 including a robotic voyage to an asteroid in 2024 and the creation of a research base on the lunar south pole by 2030.
