Offenders have stolen from, assaulted, and even committed armed robbery of Union Pacific employees, amounting to &#8220;$5 million in claims, losses, and damages,&#8221; according to the company. The railroad is faulting L.A. County district attorney George Gasc\u00f3n&#8217;s (D.) &#8220;well-intended social justice goals,&#8221; such as no-cash bail, for the railway theft spike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Criminals are caught and arrested, turned over to local authorities for booking, arraigned before the local courts, charges are reduced to a misdemeanor or petty offense, and the criminal is released after paying a nominal fine,&#8221; Union Pacific general director of public affairs Adrian Guerrero wrote in a letter to Gasc\u00f3n. &#8220;In fact, criminals boast to our officers that charges will be pled down to simple trespassing\u2014which bears no serious consequence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBS 2 photojournalist John Schreiber <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnschreiber\/status\/1481770722271760384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1481770722271760384%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newsweek.com%2Fstolen-amazon-ups-covid-test-theft-railway-viral-los-angeles-1669366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has documented<\/a> the rail theft spike, posting videos of tracks in the region littered with thousands of ravaged boxes, packages, and bags.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Keep hearing of train burglaries in LA on the scanner so went to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LincolnHeights?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LincolnHeights<\/a> to see it all. Cargo containers left busted open on trains. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSLA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CBSLA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JvNF4UVy2K\">pic.twitter.com\/JvNF4UVy2K<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Schreiber (@johnschreiber) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnschreiber\/status\/1481770722271760384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Echoing calls from defund the police activists to &#8220;reimagine public safety,&#8221; Gasc\u00f3n in December 2020&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/SPECIAL-DIRECTIVE-20-07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent<\/a> a special directive for L.A. County to dismiss misdemeanor offenses such as trespassing, drug possession, loitering, and resisting arrest. The directive also orders deputy district attorneys &#8220;to waive fines and fees&#8221; for offenders unable to afford legal representation.<\/p>\n<p>About 90 containers are being compromised a day, according to Union Pacific. The company also said it has not been notified of any court proceedings after making more than 100 arrests on its own.
