Ron DeSantis\u2019s (R) office, during its legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed map is thought to give Republicans an advantage in four districts, opposed to the Senate\u2019s previous draft that would likely garner Republicans only two additional seats. DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/florida\/florida-governors-office-releases-proposed-congressional-map\/BJHZWE447BEATI6Y6Z6YCRDCS4\/\">cited<\/a> legal concerns with the Senate\u2019s map as he asked the legislature to consider his revised proposal:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">We have legal concerns with the congressional redistricting maps under consideration in the legislature. We have submitted an alternative proposal, which we can support, that adheres to federal and state requirements and addresses our legal concerns, while working to increase district compactness, minimize county splits where feasible, and protect minority voting populations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rHaTdrpjgF\">pic.twitter.com\/rHaTdrpjgF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Anthony Sabatini (@AnthonySabatini) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonySabatini\/status\/1483103012939837446?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s map <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/487126-governor-desantis-office-proposes-congressional-redistricting-map\/\">revealed<\/a> 18 districts that would likely lean right with ten leading left. The Senate map, proposed in November, only divided up the districts with 16 leaning right and 12 leaning left.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Senate\u2019s map, Rep. Stephanie Murphy\u2019s (D-FL) district is eliminated by splitting it into two districts, one north, and one south. As a result, Murphy has announced she will not seek reelection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>State Rep. Anthony Sabatini (R) has announced he will run for the northern district likely to be realigned in favor of the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s map would also reconfigure the Tampa Bay area to benefit the GOP, where Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL) is vacating to challenge DeSantis for Florida\u2019s governorship.&nbsp;Trump-endorsed Anna Paulina Luna is set to campaign for Crist\u2019s vacated seat.<\/p>\n<p>The draft also&nbsp;favorably&nbsp;impacts Jacksonville\u2019s district lines for Republicans, along with placing Florida\u2019s newly earned seat, through population growth, in South Florida \u2013 also a GOP favored district.<\/p>\n<p>With the Florida GOP&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Fla_Pol\/status\/1483009328437157891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surpassing<\/a>&nbsp;Democrats in voter registrations for the first time ever in 2021, the Florida legislature will weigh DeSantis\u2019s proposal during January and February\u2019s legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>The likelihood that DeSantis\u2019s maps will become enacted by the legislature seems probable due to the governor\u2019s positive approval rating in the state. Yet with the legislature under the leadership of establishment Republicans&nbsp;Senate President Wilton Simpson and House Speaker Chris Sprowls, revisions to DeSantis\u2019s map may occur.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Florida legislature will study DeSantis\u2019s map as Democrats are <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/12\/democrats-are-doing-weirdly-well-in-redistricting.html\">doing<\/a> \u201cweirdly well\u201d in nationwide redistricting battles, according to <em>New York Magazine<\/em>.
