The investigators said that the pilot, who was cleared to fly that day under visual flight rules without instruments, broke federal regulations when he allegedly flew into a cloud that obstructed his vision and likely disoriented him, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-cause-2c87b04d28961fd277927eea8e8e5564\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The crash killed Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and the seven others on board, including the pilot Ara Zobayan. The helicopter did not contain a so-called \u201cblack box\u201d recording device often used by investigators of helicopter and plane crashes to piece together the final moments before impact.<\/p>\n<p>The crash that lead to Bryant\u2019s death has prompted numerous accusations of blame and several lawsuits. Bryant\u2019s widow, Vanessa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vanessa-bryant-files-wrongful-death-suit-against-helicopter-company\">blamed the helicopter company<\/a>. The pilot\u2019s brother, while avoiding blaming Bryant, said the basketball star knew the risks of flying in poor weather that day. The helicopter company has cast blame on air traffic controllers.<\/p>\n<p>In February of last year, Vanessa Bryant filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Island Express Helicopters. Bryant alleged that Zobayan was \u201cnegligent and careless\u201d in piloting the helicopter that day and caused the death of her husband and daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendant Island Express Helicopters\u2019 breach of its duty and negligence caused the injuries and damages complained of herein and Plaintiffs\u2019 deceased, Kobe Bryant, was killed as a direct result of the negligent conduct of Zobayan for which Defendant Island Express Helicopters is vicariously liable in all respects,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the lawsuit, Island Express Helicopters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/ny-helicopter-co-in-kobe-bryant-crash-sues-air-traffic-controllers-20200826-5xotp6gz2bgm3dgobxrprurgrm-story.html\">filed<\/a> a cross-complaint in August against two air traffic controllers for alleged \u201cnegligent acts.\u201d The company said the flight controllers denied a request by Zobayan for a \u201cflight following\u201d before ensuring that the request could not be met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to lose radar and comms probably pretty shortly so you can just squawk V-FR and when you get closer to Camarillo tower,\u201d the lawsuit quotes one of the flight controllers telling Zobayan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis denial was improper because radar contact had not been lost and services were being denied based on the possibility they might be lost at some point in the future,\u201d the lawsuit says.<\/p>\n<p>The cross-complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/ny-vanessa-bryant-suit-against-kobe-chopper-co-moved-to-federal-court-20201006-clxg2falkvcopbrqaefuimximu-story.html\">forced<\/a> Bryant\u2019s lawsuit to move to federal court, a switch that Bryant\u2019s legal team argued against.
