Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n<p>During COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced recession, DeSantis \u2014 who was among the first Republican governors to reopen his state \u2014 quickly emerged as a national conservative leader, calling for a return to normalcy while protecting the most vulnerable. Fried, who serves as Florida\u2019s agricultural commissioner, has led Democrats in her state in criticizing DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with NPR\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ds.npr.org\/s447\/audio\/2022\/01\/tfr20220114.mp3?sc=siteplayer&amp;aw_0_1st.playerid=siteplayer\">Friday Roundup Podcast<\/a>, however, Fried took her criticism to the next level: comparing DeSantis to Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n<p>During the conversation, Co-host Melissa Ross asked Fried to explain a tweet calling DeSantis a \u201cdictator.\u201d In response, she explained that DeSantis\u2019 policies are similar to those passed during \u201cthe rise of Hitler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Democrat candidate Nikki Fried on DeSantis\u2019s policies as governor: \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what Hitler did to the Jews back during World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now I don\u2019t have a PhD in history, but I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s not *exactly* what Hitler did to the Jews during WWII.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9OfoD2fcsX\">pic.twitter.com\/9OfoD2fcsX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaeljknowles\/status\/1482838045846089735?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up in Miami, you know, and having neighbors that were Cubans \u2014 growing up with hearing the stories of so many of our Floridians who have left dictatorships and communism and socialist countries \u2014 and coming here to the state of Florida for capitalism, for open opportunities to succeed: [DeSantis] is doing everything possible to take away power from local governments,\u201d Fried said. \u201cTaking away people\u2019s abilities to protest. Making it harder to vote. Talking about banning books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what dictators do,\u201d Fried continued. \u201cInstead of listening and trying to govern with the people, he is trying to govern over the people, and, you know, that, I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m a student of history, too. I saw the rise of Hitler, I learned those stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you comparing DeSantis to Hitler?\u201d pressed Ross. \u201cIn a lot of ways, yes,\u201d Fried responded. \u201cI have studied Hitler and how he got to power, you know, wanting his own militia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Ross pointed out that several other states have their own militias, Fried doubled down: \u201cThis governor is doing it for the sole purposes of power and doing so to make fear and to instill that, to blame people for what is happening in their lives, blaming certain parts of our society and culture, and that\u2019s exactly what Hitler did to the Jews back during World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross noted that Fried\u2019s response resembled Godwin\u2019s Law \u2014 the notion that the probability of invoking Hitler increases to 1 as any online discussion continues. \u201cDo I think that we\u2019re going to get to the extent of Hitler\u2019s power?\u201d Fried replied. \u201cOf course not. But the rise of his power and what he did to scapegoat certain parts \u2026 that\u2019s what this governor is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 colleagues quickly rose to condemn Fried\u2019s remarks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHitler systematically murdered 6 million Jews and appx 3 million others. @GovRonDeSantis is loved by the Jewish community and has led our state with dignity on so many issues,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GabeGroisman\/status\/1482507788416954369\">said<\/a> Gabriel Groisman, mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida. \u201c@NikkiFried, Your desperation is showing. Disagreeing with his policies doesn\u2019t make him Hitler.
