The last Chinese census showed men aged 20-40 outnumbering women by 17.5 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By 2019, China\u2019s birth rate was once again falling to historic lows, and in 2021 it hit 7.52 births per thousand people, which would qualify China for the \u201cbottom 10\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/birth-rate-by-country\"><span>lowest birth rates<\/span><\/a><span> in the world. The birth rate reported for 2021 was the lowest in 61 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The fertility rate for Chinese women has also dropped to historic lows. The new data release showed 18.9 percent of the population is now 60 or older, while only 63 percent is \u201cworking age,\u201d meaning 18 to 59. As with many other industrialized nations, including the United States, China faces a declining number of workers paying benefits for a growing number of retirees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The aging population could also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/chinas-births-fall-in-2021-as-workforce-shrinks\/\"><span>derail<\/span><\/a><span> China\u2019s plan to become less reliant on exports, sustaining economic growth with rising domestic demand. A dwindling population will be unlikely to provide the kind of high demand China seeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/chinas-population-barely-grew-in-2021-as-births-dropped-for-a-fifth-year-11642385947\"><i><span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>(WSJ) on Monday quoted Chinese officials who speculated the coronavirus pandemic reduced birth rates because the locked-down population had trouble dating and pairing off into marriages, and because a fearful public is less likely to have children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut researchers and officials also point to underlying factors, such as the dwindling number of women of childbearing age, that suggest low births have become a new normal,\u201d the <\/span><i><span>WSJ <\/span><\/i><span>countered.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThe high cost of living, delayed marriages and lack of social mobility are frequently cited as contributing factors to young Chinese people\u2019s reluctance to have children.
