Glenn Youngkin (R) signed an executive order removing mask mandates in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin was sworn in as the state\u2019s 74th governor over the weekend, signing a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/local-politics-elections-news\/2022\/01\/new-va-gov-youngkin-issues-executive-orders-on-covid-mandates-crt-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive orders.&nbsp;<\/a>One order in particular removed mask mandates in schools by allowing parents to decide whether or not their child will wear a mask as opposed to the school district.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Almost immediately upon his signing the executive orders, the Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax school districts announced masking will remain in place. Per <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/local\/arlington-alexandria-fairfax-schools-set-to-defy-youngkins-order-on-mask-mandates\">WJLA<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Richmond Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras tweeted Saturday afternoon: \u201d@RPS_Schools will maintain its 100% mask mandate for students, staff, and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times-Dispatch reports that the city of Alexandria\u2019s school system said in a statement Sunday that it \u201cwill continue to abide by the health and safety guidelines of the CDC and the Alexandria Health Department and continue to require all individuals to wear masks that cover the nose and mouth in ACPS schools, facilities and buses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fairfax County\u2019s school system said it is reviewing the \u201coperational implications\u201d of Youngkin\u2019s order, but that it also plans to continue to require students and staff to wear masks. Arlington County\u2019s public schools said in a statement Saturday that its mask requirement is unchanged.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When asked if he would make the school districts comply with his order, Youngkin said: \u201cWe wrote the order specifically to give all of the school systems, basically, eight days to get ready. To listen to parents. And the fact that tweet came out from Arlington County within minutes of my executive order, what that tells me, they haven\u2019t listened to parents yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to Youngkin\u2019s comments, Jen Psaki, who described herself as an \u201cArlington County parent,\u201d praised the school districts for pushing masking in schools.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cArlington county parent here (don\u2019t believe you are <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GlennYoungkin\">@GlennYoungkin&nbsp;<\/a><\/span>but correct me if I am wrong).
