Version: 4.0.47--><p>Novak Djokovic will not be defending his Australian Open title.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the world\u2019s number one tennis player lost his appeal to remain in Australia after his visa was canceled a second time on Friday due to his decision to remain unvaccinated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/novak-djokovic-visa-saga-returns-to-federal-court-20220116-p59olc.html\">The Age<\/a> \u2014 an Australian news outlet \u2014 Djokovic is being deported due to the risk that his \u201cvaccine skepticism posed a risk to public health and good order of Australian society.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cancellation decision was made on health, safety and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so,\u201d Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI welcome the decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PM Scott Morrison statement on Novak Djokovic: \u201cAustralians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/auspol?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#auspol<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LRYArRywuR\">pic.twitter.com\/LRYArRywuR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Butler (@JoshButler) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshButler\/status\/1482628773229252610?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Age reports that Djokovic was deported Sunday evening on a flight to Dubai.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am extremely disappointed with the court ruling to dismiss my application for judicial review of the Minister\u2019s decision to cancel my visa, which means I cannot stay in Australia and participate in the Australian Open,\u201d Djokovic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1482623379761156096?s=20\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI respect the court\u2019s ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country,\u201d he continued. \u201cI am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following a successful appeal of the Australian government\u2019s decision to initially revoke his visa, Djokovic had his visa canceled a second time on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I exercised my power under section 133C(3) of the Migration Act to cancel the visa held by Mr Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so,\u201d Australian Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Morrison government is firmly committed to protecting Australia\u2019s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d the statement continued.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As reported by The Guardian, Hawke also discussed the potential for \u201ccivil unrest\u201d in Australia due to Djokovic\u2019s vaccination status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI consider that Mr Djokovic\u2019s ongoing presence in Australia may lead to an increase in anti-vaccination sentiment generated in the Australian community, potentially leading to an increase in civil unrest of the kind previously experienced in Australia with rallies and protests which may themselves be a source of community transmission,\u201d Hawke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2022\/jan\/15\/novak-djokovic-visa-australian-minister-alex-hawke-says-risk-of-civil-unrest-behind-cancellation\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The nine-time winner of the Australian Open first had his visa canceled on Thursday, January 6, by Australian authorities after he \u201cfailed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic arrived in Australia Wednesday, January 5, in order to participate in the 2022 Australian Open, and after a lengthy standoff with Australian officials, was told that he would not be allowed into the country. Djokovic\u2019s medical exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine \u2014 which was granted by Tennis Australia and the Victorian government \u2014 was the reason for the standoff.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian government is a state-level authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe visa for Novak Djokovic has been cancelled,\u201d Australian Minister for Health Greg Hunt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/novak-djokovic-denied-entry-into-australia-visa-canceled\">said<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cObviously, that follows a review of the exemption which was provided by the Victorian government process. They were looking at the integrity and the evidence behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a matter to him whether he wishes to appeal that, but if a visa is canceled, someone will have to leave the country,\u201d Hunt continued.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic\u2019s lawyers challenged the decision by Australian authorities, and it emerged that Djokovic was granted the medical exemption due to recovering from COVID-19 in December 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Djokovic had received, on 30 December 2021, a letter from the Chief Medical Officer of Tennis Australia recording that he had been provided with a \u2018Medical exemption from COVID vaccination\u2019 on the grounds that he had recently recovered from COVID,\u201d according to documents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/08\/tennis\/novak-djokovic-covid-australia-intl-spt\/index.html\">published<\/a> by Australia\u2019s Federal Circuit Court on Saturday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The case quickly gained worldwide attention, with both of Djokovic\u2019s parents speaking out on the situation after having conversations with their son. The president of Serbia \u2014 Djokovic\u2019s home country \u2014 also spoke out in support of the tennis star, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.ndtv.com\/tennis\/serbian-president-aleksandar-vucic-denounces-political-witch-hunt-of-novak-djokovic-in-australian-open-row-over-vaccine-exemption-2693622\">calling<\/a> it a \u201cpolitical witch hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Open begins January 16 and runs through January 31.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
