At the time of this article\u2019s publication, the price of Dogecoin rests at roughly $0.19.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Tesla merch buyable with Dogecoin<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1481873421390680065?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Tesla\u2019s merchandise <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.tesla.com\/\">store<\/a> features several items available for purchase via Dogecoin \u2014 including a 200-Doge Cybertruck trucker hat, a 205-Doge Cybertruck beanie, and an 835-Doge \u201cGiga Texas Belt Buckle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dogecoin \u2014 originally based on an internet meme \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-is-dogecoin-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-latest-viral-cryptocurrency\">surged<\/a> over 1,500% last February, attaining a total valuation exceeding $10 billion. Musk first tweeted about the satirical currency on February 4, proclaiming that \u201cDogecoin is the people\u2019s crypto.\u201d He was soon followed by celebrities such as rapper Snoop Dogg, who tweeted an image of \u201cSnoop Doge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elonmusk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KElwKghpei\">pic.twitter.com\/KElwKghpei<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Snoop Dogg (@SnoopDogg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SnoopDogg\/status\/1358141965930426368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Musk and his mother also spoke about Dogecoin during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/to-the-moon-dogecoin-plummets-robinhood-experiences-issues-after-elon-musk-admits-its-a-hustle-on-snl\">appearance<\/a> on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in May. \u201cI\u2019m excited for my mother\u2019s day gift. I just hope it\u2019s not dogecoin,\u201d Musk\u2019s mother said. \u201cIt is,\u201d Musk responded. \u201cIt sure is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/warren-asks-biden-administration-to-crack-down-on-cryptocurrencies\">asked<\/a> Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to consider new regulations on cryptocurrencies. Writing to Yellen, who is also chair of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, Warren said that the rising popularity of cryptocurrencies \u2014 which are not controlled by any central bank or other monetary authority \u2014 demands federal attention.<\/p>\n<p>Warren\u2019s letter read:<\/p>\n<p>I have become increasingly concerned about the dangers cryptocurrencies pose to investors, consumers, and the environment in the absence of sufficient regulation in the United States. However, as the demand for cryptocurrencies continues to grow and these assets become more embedded in our financial system, the Council must determine whether these trends raise concerns beyond investor and consumer protection and extend to broader systemic vulnerabilities that could threaten financial stability.<\/p>\n<p>Warren noted that 27% of hedge funds have cryptocurrency holdings, while banks\u2019 holdings of digital assets create \u201cliquidity, credit, market, and operational risks.\u201d The letter continued:<\/p>\n<p>These examples demonstrate the extent to which cryptocurrencies currently touch or can ripple through nearly every corner of the financial system. As such, it is essential that the policy response to the risks posed by these assets is coordinated and holistic, rather than fragmented amongst individual financial agencies\u2026<\/p>\n<p>FSOC should review this matter and determine whether it is appropriate to utilize its statutory authority to contain the systemic risks posed by the growing cryptocurrency market.
