Though Republicans hold a majority, Chief Justice Maureen O\u2019Connor sided with Democrats, as she did when ruling on the state legislative lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence in these cases makes clear beyond all doubt that the General Assembly did not heed the clarion call sent by Ohio voters to stop political gerrymandering,\u201d Justice Michael Donnelly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_document\/order_-_ohio_congressional_redistricting_ruling_1_14_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> for the majority.<\/p>\n<p>The state legislature drew the new lines after Ohio\u2019s redistricting commission failed to agree on a new map itself. The new map would have given Republicans at least 12 of the state\u2019s 15 congressional districts, with Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur\u2019s seat being competitive.<\/p>\n<p>That map also came after Ohio\u2019s outgoing map held strong for the entire decade, without a single congressional seat changing hands from one party to the other. Census data released last year indicated that Ohio would <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/12\/census-bureau-redistricting-data-new-maps-legal-challenges-elections-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lose a congressional seat<\/a> due to its relatively slow population growth. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/11\/republican-north-carolina-congressional-map-court-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Republicans Notch Big Win As Court Upholds North Carolina\u2019s New Congressional Map)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">DECISION: The Supreme Court invalidated the Ohio General Assembly bill that reapportioned Ohio\u2019s 15 U.S. House districts, because the resulting congressional-district map violated the partisan gerrymandering prohibitions contained in the Ohio Constitution. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ex3mwiqfcn\">https:\/\/t.co\/ex3mwiqfcn<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v0U0yhDPKn\">pic.twitter.com\/v0U0yhDPKn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ohio Supreme Court (@OHSupremeCourt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OHSupremeCourt\/status\/1482038188424183817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the voter-approved measure, the state legislature was barred from passing \u201ca plan that unduly favors or disfavors a political party or its incumbents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During oral arguments before the court last week, groups urging the map to be tossed focused on Franklin County, which includes Cincinnati. The thrown-out map split the county three ways, ensuring Republican Rep. Steve Chabot an easier path to victory after he was thought to be endangered in 2020. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/05\/cook-political-report-david-wasserman-congress-redistricting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Top House Forecaster: Republicans\u2019 Redistricting Advantage Hardly Panned Out)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chabot\u2019s seat is now the most likely to become endangered, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1482063257573724161\">noted<\/a> Dave Wasserman, a senior editor at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling now means that the legislature will have 30 days to craft new lines that can withstand a court challenge.
