Earlier this month, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) encouraged Democrats to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10368449\/Nancy-Pelosi-tells-donors-Democrats-need-boastful-Bidens-accomplishments.html\">brag more<\/a> about what we have been doing\u201d in office. The central boast? \u201cPresident Biden has already produced 6 million jobs. His predecessor was producing 30,000 jobs a month, he\u2019s [Biden] already produced 6 million jobs with his initiatives,\u201d Pelosi told Punchbowl News.&nbsp;The president has repeatedly engaged in economic chest-thumping over his alleged role in generating \u201cmore jobs in the first eight months of my administration than any president in American history\u201d \u2014 an assertion that Politifact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2021\/oct\/22\/joe-biden\/fact-checking-joe-biden-about-job-gains-his-watch\/\">rebuffed<\/a> in part.<\/p>\n<p>But a new analysis shows that the Biden administration\u2019s economic policies did not add a single job to the U.S. economy in the last year; in fact, they may have cost more than 100,000 jobs. Last February, the Congressional Budget Office estimated the U.S. economy would add an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2021-02\/56965-Economic-Outlook.pdf\">521,000 jobs a month<\/a> between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2021 \u2014 creating a total of 6,252,000 jobs. One year later, data show that the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/poverty-studies\/december-jobs-report-confirms-democrats-1-9-trillion-american-rescue-plan-didnt-produce-a-single-promised-job-in-2021\/\">economy added<\/a> 6,116,000 jobs during that time period \u2014 136,000 fewer jobs than the CBO estimated. But the CBO based its estimate on the economic policies of the <em>Trump<\/em> administration; the 6.252 million jobs would have been created if Joe Biden had done nothing, according to Matt Weidinger of the American Enterprise Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, President Biden took notice of total job creation in 2021 and credited his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/bidens-big-spending-in-review-2021\">$1.9 trillion<\/a> stimulus bill, the American Rescue Plan. \u201cWe have added 6.4 million new jobs since January of last year \u2014 in one year. And that\u2019s one of the most \u2014 that\u2019s the most jobs in any calendar year by any president in history,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/01\/07\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-december-2021-jobs-report\/\">boasted<\/a> on January 7 while bizarrely celebrating the dismal December 2021 jobs report. \u201cHow, how, how did that happen? Well, the American Rescue Plan got the economy off its back and moving again, back on its feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Biden had promised his rounds of multi-trillion-dollar stimulus spending would create millions of jobs <em>over and above<\/em> the CBO\u2019s baseline. During a speech in the Rose Garden promoting the American Rescue Plan last March 12, Biden promised the legislation would more than double the CBO\u2019s job creation estimate. \u201cWe have to spend this money to make sure we have economic growth, unrelated to how much it\u2019s going to help people,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/03\/12\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-american-rescue-plan-2\/\">asserted<\/a>. \u2018Well, guess what?&nbsp; Every single major economist out there \u2014 Left, Right, and center \u2014 supported this plan,\u201d he added in an act of undiluted overstatement. \u201cEven Wall Street agreed.&nbsp;According to Moody\u2019s, for example, by the end of this year, this law alone will create 7 million new jobs \u2014 7 million.\u201d Speaker Pelosi made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/22721\">less extravagant claim<\/a> on the House floor last February 26: \u201cIf we do not enact this package, the results could be catastrophic: depriving workers and the economy of 4 million fewer jobs to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor was the American Rescue Plan the only legislation that Biden promised would create more jobs than the Trump administration <em>status quo<\/em>. At the signing ceremony for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/where-does-all-that-money-go-breaking-down-bidens-trillion-dollar-infrastructure-package\">$1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework<\/a> (at which she was famously snubbed), Vice President Kamala Harris said the BIF would create millions more jobs. \u201cAfter this bill is signed into law, millions more Americans will go to work in good-paying, good union jobs,\u201d Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/11\/15\/remarks-by-vice-president-harris-at-signing-of-h-r-3684-the-infrastructure-investment-and-jobs-act\/\">said<\/a> on November 15, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, the Biden administration knew it was lying when it made the infrastructure claim. Biden and Harris cited a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodysanalytics.com\/-\/media\/article\/2021\/macroeconomic-consequences-of-the-infrastructure-investment-and-jobs-act-and-build-back-better-framework.pdf\">report<\/a> from Moody\u2019s Analytics while claiming the infrastructure investment would create \u201cmillions\u201d of new jobs. But the Biden administration admitted that the new legislation would not create millions of <em>jobs<\/em>; it would allegedly be responsible for millions of \u201cjob-years.\u201d What\u2019s a job-year? It means one person holding a new job for one year: If the same person holds the same job for two years, that counts as two \u201cjob-years.\u201d The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2021\/11\/white-house-uses-job-years-not-jobs-to-tout-infrastructure-law\/\">admitted<\/a> to Factcheck.org that it used this misleading measure, without telling listeners of the change. So, the administration did itself no favors with the infrastructure overstatement.<\/p>\n<p>How did the boastful Biden administration actually perform? We can eliminate the infrastructure bill, which the president signed on November 15 and that was based on \u201cjob-years.\u201d We can accept Pelosi\u2019s lower estimate that the American Rescue Plan would create 4 million jobs, rather than the president\u2019s claim of 7 million.<\/p>\n<p>At that rate, the U.S. economy should have produced 10.252 million jobs in 2021.
