Race was listed as one of the factors that increases a person\u2019s risk for severe illness and should be taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNon-white race or Hispanic\/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor, as longstanding systemic health and social inequities have contributed to an increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19,\u201d New York\u2019s health department stated in official guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Utah health officials use a point system to calculate a COVID-19 patient\u2019s \u201crisk score\u201d to determine whether to administer monoclonal antibody treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Being of \u201cNon-White race or Hispanic\/Latinx ethnicity\u201d bumps a patient\u2019s risk score up two points, the same amount the score is raised when a patient has a \u201chighest-risk comorbidity\u201d such as diabetes, obesity, or being severely immunocompromised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRisk factors for hospitalization and mortality are now well-recognized and include age, cumulative comorbidities, male gender, shortness of breath, and importantly, but for reasons not well-understood, non-white race\/ethnicity,\u201d reads Utah\u2019s state <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus-download.utah.gov\/Health\/Utah_CSC_Monoclonal_Ab_Guidelines_v16_09012021.pdf\">guidelines<\/a> on administering monoclonal antibody treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota health department cited the FDA in state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/diseases\/coronavirus\/hcp\/mabethical.pdf\">guidance<\/a> saying health care providers may consider&nbsp;\u201cwhether a patient has heightened risk of progression to severe COVID-19 associated with race and ethnicity\u201d when determining eligibility for monoclonal antibodies.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has echoed the FDA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/health-equity\/race-ethnicity.html\">saying<\/a> \u201cCOVID-19 has unequally affected many racial and ethnic minority groups, putting them&nbsp;more at risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new FDA guidelines were met with criticism from Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and former Housing and Urban Development secretary in the Trump administration. Carson said the guidance reminded him of the racial discrimination he endured as a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere we are trying to bring it back.
