Tom Tiffany and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin announced the legislation on Friday. In a press release, the pair noted of a \u201cHouse member from Minnesota\u201d who allegedly took advantage of the loophole they wish to close by paying a reported $2.8 million to her husband\u2019s consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans are seemingly referring to Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, though they acknowledged the issue transcends Omar and political parties.<\/p>\n<p>The OMAR Act, Reps. Tiffany and Gallagher said, \u201cwould put an end to the practice of candidates for office tapping their campaign accounts to enrich their spouses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, lawmakers of both political parties have engaged in the ethically dubious practice of pocketing campaign funds by \u2018hiring\u2019 their spouses and laundering the money as campaign related expenses,\u201d Tiffany said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is outrageous and inappropriate for Members of Congress to convert campaign donations to personal funds in this way,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt feeds public perceptions of corruption, undermines public trust in Congress, and must come to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of political party, we should all be able to agree that running for political office shouldn\u2019t be part of a family enrichment scheme,\u201d Tiffany added. \u201cPassing the OMAR Act will help restore public confidence in Congress and stop politicians from effectively pocketing their campaign funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher charged that such loopholes \u201callow members of Congress to funnel campaign funds to their spouses are despicable and erode trust in our government. There\u2019s simply no logical reason for allowing this practice to continue, and I\u2019m proud to join Rep. Tiffany in this common-sense effort to ensure members can\u2019t profit off running for Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2021\/feb\/5\/house-republicans-introduce-omar-act-ban-campaigns\/\">noted<\/a> by The Washington Examiner, Omar\u2019s decision to pay the firm of&nbsp;political consultant Tim Mynett, whom she married in March, a&nbsp;reported $2.8 million during her 2020 reelection campaign triggered conservatives to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).<\/p>\n<p>Omar defended herself to supporters in an email dated November 15 that stated she was \u201ccutting ties with her husband\u2019s political consulting firm after winning her bid for reelection, saying she wants to ensure her supporters feel there\u2019s no perceived issue,\u201d The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/2020-11-16\/rep-omar-terminates-contract-with-husbands-consulting-firm\">reported<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery dollar that was spent went to a team of more than twenty that were helping us fight back against attacks and organize on the ground and online in a COVID-19 world. And Tim \u2014 beyond his salary at the firm \u2014 received no profit whatsoever from the consulting relationship the firm provided,\u201d the email read.<\/p>\n<p>The FEC has yet to move on the complaint by conservatives, the AP noted.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tiffany.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/tiffany-gallagher-introduce-omar-act-stop-lawmakers-funneling-campaign-cash\">background<\/a>\u201d portion of Tiffany and Gallagher\u2019s press release reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Fox News reported how an incumbent House member from Minnesota <a href=\"https:\/\/iqconnect.house.gov\/iqextranet\/iqClickTrk.aspx?&amp;cid=WI07TT&amp;crop=14471QQQ6085654QQQ5061529QQQ7118579&amp;report_id=&amp;redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.foxnews.com%2fpolitics%2filhan-omar-husband-campaign-firm&amp;redir_log=539529374955458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took advantage of this loophole<\/a> \u201cpaid nearly $2.8&nbsp;million to her husband\u2019s political consulting firm so far in the 2019-2020&nbsp;election&nbsp;cycle, including nearly 70% of her third-quarter disbursements.\u201d To put this huge sum in perspective, it <a title=\"https:\/\/iqconnect.house.gov\/iqextranet\/iqClickTrk.aspx?&amp;cid=WI07TT&amp;crop=14471QQQ6085654QQQ5061529QQQ7118579&amp;report_id=&amp;redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.usatoday.com%2fstory%2fnews%2fpolitics%2f2013%2f03%2f18%2fcampaign-funds-nepotism-relatives-payroll-congress%2f1991251%2f&amp;redir_log=823718579982772\" href=\"https:\/\/iqconnect.house.gov\/iqextranet\/iqClickTrk.aspx?&amp;cid=WI07TT&amp;crop=14471QQQ6085654QQQ5061529QQQ7118579&amp;report_id=&amp;redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.usatoday.com%2fstory%2fnews%2fpolitics%2f2013%2f03%2f18%2fcampaign-funds-nepotism-relatives-payroll-congress%2f1991251%2f&amp;redir_log=823718579982772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appears to be more than all members of Congress<\/a> paid their immediate relatives during the entire 2012 election cycle, combined.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2007, Rep.
