Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) have opposed boycotting the Beijing Olympics despite the well-documented evidence of gross human rights violations under the Chinese Communist Party regime, including genocide. The Republicans have argued that the 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympics \u201cfailed,\u201d without elaborating, and that not sending athletes to China would hurt the athletes, despite their presence in the capital exposing them to arguably the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/28\/china-admits-worst-coronavirus-situation-since-2020-genocide-olympics-approach\/\">dangerous<\/a> outbreak of Chinese coronavirus anywhere in the world today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Human rights activists and members of communities persecuted by the Chinese communist regime have for months urged countries to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics or for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to relocate the event. The IOC has not budged and only one country has committed to boycotting the Olympics: North Korea, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/01\/07\/north-korea-becomes-first-country-to-boycott-genocide-olympics-to-protest-america\/\">issued<\/a> a statement saying it feared its athletes would be exposed to the massive coronavirus outbreak in its allied country.<\/p>\n<p>The IOC banned North Korea from participating in this year\u2019s Games, so the \u201cboycott\u201d is at best symbolic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden will not back an athletic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, but backed a boycott of Atlanta by the MLB All-Star Game. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5M3RFq6GEa\">https:\/\/t.co\/5M3RFq6GEa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1469467160414146562?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>McCarthy, discussing the Republican agenda heading into the 2022 midterm elections, listed opposition to the Olympics in China among priorities to hold China accountable for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/06\/11\/9-ways-unrelated-wuhan-lab-china-created-pandemic\/\">causing<\/a> the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you watch how to deal with China, we came out with a five-step program on how to deal with China to know where COVID [Chinese coronavirus] came from and release all the intelligence, don\u2019t go to the Olympics,\u201d McCarthy explained, \u201cstop gain-of-function from going to any other country, holding them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just going to have the party of the ideas, the party of the parent, and what we\u2019re going to do is you\u2019ll find later this year we will roll out a Commitment to America\u2014a clear contrast on what our policies are versus the one-party rule,\u201d the House minority leader added.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the IOC allowing Beijing to host the Olympics a second time \u2013 the city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and used the geopolitical cache it earned from that effort to engage in a campaign of genocide against the Uyghur people of East Turkistan \u2013 McCarthy pointed to the lack of leadership in the White House as fueling the poor effort to oppose this year\u2019s Games.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There&#8217;s a reason why the world is uniting to boycott the Communist Chinese Genocide Olympics. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cUBW8wl5Vn\">https:\/\/t.co\/cUBW8wl5Vn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1432821109980815366?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhy would the world reward China with the Olympics again\u2014this will be twice, and it hasn\u2019t been in America\u2014when we know where COVID came from?\u201d McCarthy asked. \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t China want to be the very first to know where it [Chinese coronavirus] originated from? How was it created?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo say you\u2019re just not sending diplomats\u2014they probably couldn\u2019t have gone anyway because of COVID. Where is the strong leadership?\u201d McCarthy continued, referring to President Joe Biden\u2019s broken promise not to send diplomats to the event. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t the world get together and say \u2018we\u2019re going to hold the Olympics but they\u2019re not going to be in China\u2019 and just move it to another location? That would be leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBut time and again, we\u2019ve watched this president send China the wrong message. Why don\u2019t they hold China accountable?\u201d McCarthy continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration announced in December a move it called a \u201cdiplomatic boycott\u201d of the Beijing Olympics. A \u201cdiplomatic boycott\u201d is not a boycott, as athletes would compete in the Games and the politicians not attending have no impact on the actual event. The \u201cdiplomatic boycott\u201d would consist of politicians and diplomats simply not going to Beijing, abandoning the athletes to navigate the poor conditions in Beijing on their own.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the month, the \u201cdiplomatic boycott\u201d had collapsed. (Alex Wong\/Getty)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Supporting the Beijing Olympics, some Republicans have argued, is necessary to avoid harming the ambitions of American athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJimmy Carter boycotted the Olympics in 1980. It was a dismal failure; it didn\u2019t work,\u201d Sen. Cruz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/27\/ted-cruz-boycotting-olympics-china-would-punish-athletes\/\">told<\/a> Breitbart News last month.&nbsp;\u201cAnd I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair to punish a bunch of young athletes \u2014 young men and women \u2014 who have spent their entire lives training for just this brief moment to compete on the international stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former President Trump similarly told Breitbart News the 1980 boycott was \u201cterrible,\u201d without elaborating, and dismissed not participating in a sports event hosted by a genocidal government as weak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are much more powerful things we can do than that, much, much more powerful things. That\u2019s not a powerful thing. It almost makes us look like, I don\u2019t know, sore losers,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/19\/trump-on-beijing-genocide-games-boycott-it-almost-makes-us-look-like-i-dont-know-sore-losers\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He did not identify any \u201cmuch more powerful things\u201d he would do instead of not attending the event. As president, Trump referred to genocidal dictator Xi Jinping as his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2019\/11\/22\/donald-trump-stand-hong-kong-xi-jinping\/\">friend<\/a>\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2017\/03\/13\/donald-trump-hosting-chinese-president-xi-at-mar-a-lago\/\">hosted<\/a> him at his luxury resort, Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. And it can feel very powerless when you read those things, because you think, \u2018What can I do?\u2019\u201d American figure skater Timothy LeDuc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2022\/01\/11\/u-s-olympic-figure-skater-timothy-leduc-condemns-horrifying-human-rights-abuses-by-china\/\">told<\/a> reporters this weekend after cementing his position on the U.S. team. LeDuc went further than nearly every athlete involved in the Olympics by categorically condemning the genocide of the Uyghur people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can say is we absolutely acknowledge the horrifying things that we\u2019ve seen happening to the Uyghurs. I read somewhere the other day that it\u2019s the largest number of people held in internment and labor camps since World War II,\u201d LeDuc said.<\/p>\n<p>American snowboarder Shaun White, at his peak the face of the Winter Olympics in America, recently posed for a photo with a Tibetan flag.
