SCHUMER admits that nuking the Senate is just about Democrats winning elections:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re saying things like \u2018I\u2019ll lose my election if the legislature is allowed to do this in my state\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll lose our majority\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/l6f13OQ34x\">pic.twitter.com\/l6f13OQ34x<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senate Republican Communications Center (@SRCC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SRCC\/status\/1481279579734032384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Schumer argued that the federal elections overhaul proposed in the Democrats\u2019 \u201cvoting rights\u201d bill was too important, suggesting that Republican efforts to stop it lined up with the \u201cway that societies lose democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had two professors \u2026 come yesterday, and they showed across the world how democracies die. I think that\u2019s the name of their book,\u201d Schumer began. \u201cWhen a political party countenances violence or doesn\u2019t condemn it, number one. Two, won\u2019t admit they lost fairly and squarely. And three, breaks all the norms, like McConnell did when he held up Merrick Garland. That, they believe, is a way that societies lose democracy. The Republican Party, its grand history gone with the obeisance to Donald Trump, is heading in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeader Schumer, good morning. We understand your sense of urgency. We heard the sense of urgency from the president yesterday down in Atlanta on the issue of voting rights. You\u2019ve made the case. Now there\u2019s the practical question of how you get it done,\u201d Geist pressed, noting that even just one day earlier Manchin had reiterated his stance \u2014 firmly against scrapping the filibuster. \u201cSo have you conceded that Joe Manchin will not get rid of the filibuster as he has said many many times? And if you have, how do you get voting rights through?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, we\u2019re not conceding anything. This is too important to just concede,\u201d Schumer replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think you can convince Senator Manchin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/a-threat-to-our-republic-gop-senator-blasts-schumers-plan-to-change-senate-rules\/\">Schumer<\/a> went on to say that the strategy included multiple meetings with <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/obama-clinton-winfrey-team-up-to-convince-manchin-to-kill-filibuster-report\/\">Manchin<\/a> and Sinema.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are constant meetings. Not just among a few senators, but just about every senator, every single one of the 50, is talking individually to Joe Manchin, to Kyrsten Sinema. They\u2019re saying things like, \u2018I\u2019ll lose my election if the legislature is allowed to do this in my state. We\u2019ll lose our majority but, more importantly, we\u2019ll lose our democracy.\u2019 And those speakers yesterday I mentioned were very powerful. So we\u2019re having constant discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer concluded by saying that there were a number of senators who did not support getting rid of the filibuster completely but were willing to discuss specific carveouts for issues like voting rights, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re actively discussing potential changes in the rules that hopefully can get all 50 of us there. Do I want to delude people and think it\u2019s easy or almost there? No. It\u2019s an uphill fight. But we\u2019re constantly at it. Manchin and Sinema are still talking to us, all of us, on a very regular intense basis, and we are going to keep fighting and pushing in hopes that we can get this done.
