Well, it turns out none of those theories had any merit. Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/the-weeknd-bandages-super-bowl-plastic-surgery-1234898743\/\">Variety<\/a> prior to the performance, the \u201cBlinding Lights\u201d singer said the bandages were meant as a commentary on celebrity culture, a look he began in 2019 with the release of his \u201cAfter Hours\u201d album that introduced a \u201cred-jacketed, busted-nose character and his bad-night-in-Las-Vegas storyline that has continued through many of his videos, TV and awards show appearances.\u201d Since then, he has kept the bandage\u2019s significance shrouded in mystery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis character is having a really bad night, and you can come with your own interpretation of what it is,\u201d he told Variety in April of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the Super Bowl performance, the singer strongly hinted the bandages would once again make an appearance, prompting Variety to ask him to finally explain their purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour \u2018After Hours\u2019 character has been increasingly more bandaged, with an entire head bandage at AMAs, and is now evidently post-plastic surgery. People have been speculating about this for weeks \u2014 what does it symbolize or mean?\u201d asked Variety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n<p>As to how the bandages fit into the original \u201cbad night in Las Vegas\u201d storyline, The Weeknd said that it\u2019s all progression about the character\u2019s dissent into absurdity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all a progression and we watch The Character\u2019s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can we take from the fact that you seem to be intentionally making your face increasingly unattractive while promoting your biggest album?\u201d asked the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose you could take that being attractive isn\u2019t important to me but a compelling narrative is,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n<p>While The Weeknd\u2019s visual choices certainly struck a chord with viewers, reactions to the overall performance were mixed, with some praising its unapologetic weird factor while others demanded to have 14-minutes of their life back.
