Kenya Power is a government company.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>At the height of the outage on Tuesday, Voice of America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/kenya-experiences-nationwide-power-outage-after-electric-line-collapses\/6392174.html\">reported<\/a>, \u201cat least 25 million people had lost power in Nairobi, western and central Kenya, the Rift Valley region and the Nyanza region.\u201d Reports in local media indicated that power slowly returned to several neighborhoods of Nairobi and other population centers but Kenya Power had yet to fully repair the damage.<\/p>\n<p>The electric company claimed that one downed power line deprived 25 million people of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lost power supply due to collapsed towers on the Kiambere-Embakasi high voltage transmission power line at 10:45 a.m.,\u201d a statement from the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenyaPower\/status\/1480821421324517380\">read<\/a>. \u201cWe wish to apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Kenya Power also posted photos of the damage online and their CEO allegedly on the scene to personally handle the repair.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Managing Director and CEO (Ag.), Eng. (@KenyaPower) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenyaPower\/status\/1480890814108737543?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By the time Kenya Power announced that the hours-long national blackout hand ended, large swathes of Nairobi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/national\/article\/2001434123\/areas-affected-by-second-blackout-in-nairobi-kenya-power-states\">experienced<\/a> a second, allegedly unrelated, outage Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 220k Suswa-Embakasi power transmission line that evacuates power to Athi River, Embakasi, and City Centre bulk substations has developed a sustained fault this evening,\u201d another Kenya Power statement read on Tuesday. The second outage is affecting the Nairobi Central Business District, the country\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Standard<\/em> newspaper reported, exacerbating troubles for local businessmen already outraged by the initial blackout.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2022\/01\/kenya-power-says-outage-caused-by-collapse-of-one-its-towers\/\">expressed<\/a> frustration and concerns that Kenya Power\u2019s officials were not sufficiently competent to keep the power grid running on Thursday. Some went as far as to blame \u201csabotage\u201d for the repeated blackouts and many lamented that businesses hurting from a variety of circumstances, most prominently the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, had missed out on hours of work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Kenya\u2019s the&nbsp;<em>Nation<\/em> noted in its report on the national blackout Tuesday that downed or collapsed power lines appeared to be a chronic issue for Kenya Power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis comes just weeks after the utility firm was forced to ration power following collapse of towers supporting the high voltage power transmission line connecting Loiyangalani to the Suswa substation,\u201d the <em>Nation<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nation.africa\/kenya\/news\/power-supply-restored-in-parts-of-nairobi-west-kenya-3678582\">recalled<\/a>, \u201cwhich is the primary interconnection point of power generated from various sources across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMost\u201d of the country, according to the&nbsp;<em>Standard<\/em>, similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/counties\/article\/2001370675\/nationwide-power-blackout-blamed-on-system-hitch\">experienced<\/a> a national blackout in May 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKenyans on Saturday morning woke up in darkness following a huge power outage experienced in most parts of the country. Most of them took to social media to express their fury at Kenya Power following the blackout experienced in the wee hours of Saturday morning,\u201d the newspaper reported at the time. \u201cKenya Power, however, said the outage was due to loss of power supply on the national grid occasioned by system disturbance on the transmission network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaints at the time echoed those this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot work in the office due to Covid-19 [Chinese coronavirus], we can also not work from home due to Kenya Power, this is sad. We are on our own said,\u201d a Kenyan identified as Stephen Ogango lamented, according to the&nbsp;<em>Standard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A similar regional outage in Homa Bay County in April resulted in widespread complaints from locals, who lamented that not having power resulted in food rotting and loss of business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have incurred huge losses after goods which were in my refrigerator spoilt,\u201d Pauline Akoth, a trader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/nyanza\/article\/2001410182\/homa-bay-residents-lament-month-long-power-outage\">told<\/a> the&nbsp;<em>Standard<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are relying on the electricity to transact our business.
