Schultz, who was largely credited for orchestrating the Reagan administration\u2019s Cold War policy, bring an end to the USSR, passed away over the weekend at 100.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer Secretary of State George P. Shultz, a titan of American academia, business and diplomacy who spent most of the 1980s trying to improve Cold War relations with the Soviet Union and forging a course for peace in the Middle East, has died. He was 100,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/george-p-shultz-former-secretary-state-under-reagan-dead-100-n1256970\">NBC News reported Sunday<\/a>. \u201cSchultz died Saturday at his home on the campus of Stanford University, where he was a distinguished fellow at the Hoover Institution, a think tank, and professor emeritus at Stanford\u2019s Graduate School of Business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hoover Institution called Schultz \u201ca key player, alongside President Ronald Reagan, in changing the direction of history by using the tools of diplomacy to bring the Cold War to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Reagan administration, Schultz served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Richard M. Nixon. He is best remembered, however, for his landmark nuclear weapons agreement with the then-Soviet Union \u2014 an agreement that marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the nuclear standoff between the USSR and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the nation\u2019s chief diplomat, Shultz negotiated the first treaty to reduce the size of the Soviet Union\u2019s ground-based nuclear arsenals despite fierce objections from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to Reagan\u2019s Strategic Defense Initiative, or \u2018Star Wars,&#8217;\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/new-york-elections-government\/ny-george-schultz-dies-obit-20210207-y4hzoboegbe3lahd3slix557ki-story.html\">New York Daily News added Sunday<\/a>. \u201cThe 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was a historic attempt to begin to reverse the nuclear arms race, a goal Shultz never abandoned in private life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, reflecting in his memoirs on the \u2018highly analytic, calm and unselfish Shultz,\u2019 paid Shultz an exceptional compliment in his diary: \u2018If I could choose one American to whom I would entrust the nation\u2019s fate in a crisis, it would be George Shultz,&#8217;\u201d according to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>In their obituary, published Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/08\/opinion\/george-shultz-dead.html\">the New York Times called Schultz<\/a> \u201cthe last of the power statesmen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout Mr. Shultz\u2019s steady guidance, Reagan could not have capitalized on the opportunity presented when Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985,\u201d the New York Times noted. \u201c\u2018Without Reagan, the Cold War would not have ended,\u2019 Mr. Gorbachev himself said a few years ago. \u2018But without Shultz, Reagan would not have ended the Cold War.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"teaser-content\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">On Sunday, Oct. 12, 1986, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev had reached a climactic moment in their summit at Reykjavik, Iceland. He proposed to Gorbachev to eliminate \u201call explosive nuclear devices,\u201d including \u201cbombs, battlefield systems, cruise missiles, submarine weapons, intermediate-range systems, and so on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\"><em>\u201cWe could say that, list all those weapons,\u201d replied Gorbachev.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\"><em>\u201cThen let\u2019s do it,\u201d said Mr.&nbsp;Shultz, giving birth to one of the most audacious attempts of the Cold War to eliminate nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. The deal unraveled by nightfall but helped pave the way in the years that followed to wholesale reductions in nuclear weapons at the end of the Cold War.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>That deal eventually \u201cunraveled,\u201d but it was the basis of further negotiations that eventually gave way to nuclear disarmament.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving office, Schultz became an ardent environmentalist and continued his work pressing for nuclear disarmament. He eventually became a personal advisor to former President George W.
