If we want to ban partisan gerrymandering and protect our democracy before the 2022 elections, we must pass this bill NOW. We will lose our democracy if we lose this bill. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OSZOS6P21g\">pic.twitter.com\/OSZOS6P21g<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Un-PAC (@LetsUnpac) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LetsUnpac\/status\/1480687398128345091?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re prepared to hold out indefinitely now that the holidays are over,\u201d Leila Winbury, a junior at Arizona State University, said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/arizona-college-students-strike-voting-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have seen the consequences of a broken democracy my entire life, so we\u2019re willing to suffer the consequences of hunger striking rather than the consequences of the bill not passing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/un-pac.org\/arizona-hunger-strike-for-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> says, \u201cIf the Freedom To Vote Act has not passed by MLK Day, January 17th, we will be escalating once again. We can\u2019t win without you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Un-PAC\u2019s previous effort launched for 15 days beginning December 6. Conservatives have noted the bill would federalize many state voting measures. The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dems-push-for-fed-control-of-all-elections-is-going-nowhere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;in October:<\/p>\n<p><em>Early this summer, Senate Democrats tried to advance H.R. 1, a sweeping bill designed to launch a partisan federal takeover of America\u2019s elections. They failed to win over even every Democrat in Congress. Now, they are offering a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/2747\/text\">bill<\/a>&nbsp;they\u2019ve dubbed the Freedom to Vote Act, though a more honest name would be the Freedom to Cheat Act. Democrats say it\u2019s new, but it\u2019s really just a fresh face for the same federal takeover.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Progressives are working overtime to brand the Freedom to Vote Act as a bipartisan \u201ccompromise.\u201d In truth, Democrats negotiated with themselves and once again are pushing a partisan agenda aimed at eliminating the most popular and proven safeguards that preserve Americans\u2019 confidence in democracy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Take voter ID laws, for instance. The Left rails against requiring an ID to vote, claiming \u2014 despite all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w25522\">evidence<\/a>&nbsp;to the contrary \u2014 that it is \u201cvoter suppression.\u201d With H.R. 1, they tried to abolish voter ID requirements outright. But four in five&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/polling-institute\/documents\/monmouthpoll_us_062121.pdf\/\">Americans<\/a>&nbsp;actually want everyone to show a photo ID when they vote, and these ID laws have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/568385-poll-finds-growing-support-for-voter-id-requirements\">grown<\/a>&nbsp;more popular&nbsp;this year \u2014 especially among black voters.
