Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/GettyImages-1286037306-e1641917313158-640x335-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">A British woman with Down Syndrome was refused life-saving emergency medical treatment by the NHS due to her disability, a report has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s socialised National Health Service refused to provide treatment to&nbsp;<span class=\"sdc-article-header__long-title\">Susan Sullivan, 56, who had Down syndrome, citing her disability as grounds to deny her the medical treatment she needed, which resulted in her subsequent death, it is claimed in a&nbsp;<em>Sky News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/covid-19-susan-sullivans-family-reflect-on-her-coronavirus-death-as-uk-hits-tragic-milestone-12512075\">report<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"sdc-article-header__long-title\">Susan caught coronavirus in March 2020 \u2014 around the time of the UK\u2019s first lockdown \u2014 and had varying levels of illness for about 10 days.&nbsp;<\/span>When Susan was admitted to hospital, her parents were not allowed to be present and were only permitted to contact her by telephone.<\/p>\n<p>Ida Sullivan, Susan\u2019s mother recalled that she was upset when speaking on the phone saying, \u201cAs soon as she heard my voice she said \u2018Mummy, Mummy I don\u2019t like it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&nbsp;never saw her again,\u201d said Mr Sullivan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Susan repeatedly removed her oxygen mask in hospital as she found it uncomfortable, and with her family denied access, the mask\u2019s importance was not explained to Susan in a way that she could properly understand, the&nbsp;<em>Sky News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/covid-19-susan-sullivans-family-reflect-on-her-coronavirus-death-as-uk-hits-tragic-milestone-12512075\">report claimed<\/a>.&nbsp;Mrs Sullivan insists that had she been allowed to be with her daughter this issue could have been overcome.<\/p>\n<p>Just under 26 hours after Susan was admitted to hospital, she died.<\/p>\n<p>The death took Susan\u2019s family by surprise as they were initially \u201cover the moon\u201d that she was placed on a ward \u201crather than intensive care\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It was only after they recovered Susan\u2019s medical notes, that her family realised she had been denied access to the intensive care unit, because of \u201cDown Syndrome\u201d and \u201ccardiac co-morbidities\u201d (heart problems), it was claimed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coronavirus Patients with Learning Disabilities Given &#8216;Do Not Resuscitate Orders&#8217; in Britain <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QamgJ0OOEU\">https:\/\/t.co\/QamgJ0OOEU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1361060611560505352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking to Breitbart, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachaelross21\">Rachael Ross MBE<\/a>,&nbsp;Chair of Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association and Founding Officer of the National Down Syndrome Policy Group called for the NHS to be held to account over their treatment of people with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a tragic case, but sadly we know it is not an isolated one. Being denied critical care based solely on a diagnosis of Down syndrome or learning disability is wholly unacceptable, and&nbsp;when these incidents do occur, they must be fully investigated, and those responsible held to account\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMuch more needs to be done to protect the lives of these individuals when they are at their most vulnerable and to educate the front-line health professionals who hold these precious lives in their hands\u201d, she continued.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s NHS has faced increased criticism over their treatment of people with disabilities \u2014 particularly those with intellectual disabilities \u2014 throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Reports have surfaced that NHS doctors had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/12\/28\/kids-with-learning-disabilities-offered-do-not-resuscitate-orders-uk-health-service-during-pandemic\/\">giving<\/a>&nbsp;or offering both children and adults with learning disabilities \u2018Do Not Attempt Resuscitation\u2019 (DNAR) notices, during the pandemic in an alleged effort to ease pressure on the socialised health service, presumably by eliminating the need to treat some to prioritise others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>DNAR notices are orders for healthcare staff to&nbsp;withhold medical treatment&nbsp;from a patient if they look as if they are about to die, such as if their heart stops, and are typically given to people who have an incurable condition, such as terminal cancer, or are extremely frail.<\/p>\n<p>In both instances the NHS denying individuals intensive care, or assigning them a DNAR notice purely for the reason of disability, is potentially illegal in Britain, as it may be in breach of the Equalities Act of of 2010, which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s healthcare watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/02\/14\/coronavirus-patients-with-learning-disabilities-given-do-not-resuscitate-orders-in-uks-socialised-healthcare-system\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that there was \u201cevidence of unacceptable and inappropriate\u201d use of Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) orders from NHS doctors during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, leading to avoidable deaths, in a statement released in&nbsp;December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>So far there have been no prosecutions of medical staff for refusing to treat individuals with disabilities or for the use of&nbsp;DNAR orders.<\/p>\n<p>It is also unknown how many people with learning disabilities have faced discrimination from the NHS over the pandemic, as there are over \u201c1.5 million people&nbsp;with a learning disability\u201d in the United Kingdom and medical records are classified.
