We love celebrities,&#8217;\u201d Gervais&nbsp;said.&nbsp;\u201cBy the last one it was like, \u2018God, give it to them, we hate celebrities!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what it is,\u201d the 60-year-old continued. \u201cWith all of the austerity and people struggling, they think, \u2018Why are these people lecturing me? They\u2019re going\u200a\u200a to an awards ceremony in a limo and are telling me to recycle?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople just got sick of it, just got sick of virtue signaling,\u201d the comedian&nbsp;said. \u201cAnd they were like a beacon to aim their wrath at. \u2026&nbsp;The people with nothing became tired of being lectured by people who had everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the future of the award show, Gervais said he would not be surprised if the 2022 Golden Globes were the last to take place ever, qualifying his response by saying nothing can be \u201cpredicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to get through this and start again,\u201d he told The Sun. \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone\u2019s even been invited. It\u2019s not even a ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t predict anything in this world. They could come back stronger than ever and be loved again or it could be the last one,\u201d Gervais added.&nbsp;\u201cYou never know. I don\u2019t take any-thing for granted any more. I just keep plodding on. And whatever happens, happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sun noted that the 2022 Golden Globes would be&nbsp;\u201cstreamed online and with no celebrity presenters after a backlash over diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTinseltown has boycotted the bash after an expos\u00e9 of the organisers\u2019 ethics, financial practices and lack of black members was revealed,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Gervais also elaborated on his comedy, particularly his ability to land punches against elites, while arguably being an elite himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always try and, you know, punch up,\u201d explained the comedian. \u201cYou have to make a decision as a comedian. Do you pander to the 200 most privileged people in the world in the room or the 200 million watching at home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn comedy, traditionally, we are jesters,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have low status. So I\u2019m down in the mud with the other peasants, having a go.&nbsp;I\u2019ve got to be on their side. That\u2019s why I go out there with a beer and look like a slob, because I\u2019ve got to show people that I\u2019m on their side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s what is hard nowadays, to be a stand-up comedian and keep your lower status, because everyone knows how much you\u2019ve earned,\u201d Gervais&nbsp;continued.&nbsp;\u201cSo I do it in two ways. I act like a slob. I go out in bad jeans and a bad T-shirt and drink beer out of a can. I remind them I\u2019m one of them, I shouldn\u2019t be here, I\u2019m lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I do it another way,\u201d the \u201cAfter Life\u201d star added. \u201cI talk about things where they\u2019re better off than me. I\u2019m fat, old and bald. I\u2019m going to die before them. I\u2019ve got a bad back.
