They surrounded a car they believed contained Djokovic and were reportedly pepper-sprayed by Australian police as the authorities attempted to disperse the crowd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a>: Novak Djokovic fans have locked down Melbourne streets as riots turn violent. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/9News?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#9News<\/a> DETAILS: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lh344JaepC\">https:\/\/t.co\/lh344JaepC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ER8QlpguQb\">pic.twitter.com\/ER8QlpguQb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 9News Melbourne (@9NewsMelb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/9NewsMelb\/status\/1480495000358109186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Monday was a big win for the nine-time Australian Open winner, his participation in the tournament is still in doubt, after lawyers for the federal government said they may cancel his visa a second time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawyers for the federal government, however, indicated the fight may not be over, telling the court that Immigration Minister Alex Hawke was reserving the right to exercise his personal power to again revoke Djokovic\u2019s visa,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/sports\/novak-djokovics-bid-stay-australia-goes-before-courts-2022-01-09\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If his visa is revoked a second time, Djokovic would be barred from entering the country for a period of three years.<\/p>\n<p>For the past several days, Djokovic had been held at a Melbourne hotel used as a detention facility to house asylum seekers and refugees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic had his visa canceled on Thursday by Australian authorities after he \u201cfailed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic arrived in Australia on Wednesday in order to participate in the 2022 Australian Open, and after a lengthy standoff with Australian officials, was told that he would not be allowed into the country. Djokovic\u2019s medical exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine \u2014 which was granted by Tennis Australia and the Victorian state government on Tuesday \u2014 was the reason for the standoff.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian government is a state-level authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe visa for Novak Djokovic has been cancelled,\u201d Australian Minister for Health Greg Hunt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/novak-djokovic-denied-entry-into-australia-visa-canceled\">said<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cObviously, that follows a review of the exemption which was provided by the Victorian government process. They were looking at the integrity and the evidence behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a matter to him whether he wishes to appeal that, but if a visa is canceled, someone will have to leave the country,\u201d Hunt continued.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic\u2019s lawyers challenged the decision by Australian authorities, and it emerged over the weekend that Djokovic was granted the medical exemption due to recovering from COVID-19 in December 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Djokovic had received, on 30 December 2021, a letter from the Chief Medical Officer of Tennis Australia recording that he had been provided with a \u2018Medical exemption from COVID vaccination\u2019 on the grounds that he had recently recovered from COVID,\u201d according to documents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/08\/tennis\/novak-djokovic-covid-australia-intl-spt\/index.html\">published<\/a> by Australia\u2019s Federal Circuit Court on Saturday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The case quickly became worldwide news, with both of Djokovic\u2019s parents commenting on the situation after having conversations with their son. The president of Serbia \u2014 Djokovic\u2019s home country \u2014 also spoke out in support of the tennis star, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.ndtv.com\/tennis\/serbian-president-aleksandar-vucic-denounces-political-witch-hunt-of-novak-djokovic-in-australian-open-row-over-vaccine-exemption-2693622\">calling<\/a> it a \u201cpolitical witch hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news of Djokovic\u2019s medical exemption sparked outrage in Australia, a country that has seen severe COVID-19 lockdowns over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Victorian government and Tennis Australia may permit a non-vaccinated player to compete in the Australian Open, it is the Commonwealth government that will enforce our requirements at the Australian border,\u201d Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/32997513\/novak-djokovic-needs-prove-exemption-go-home-australian-pm\">said<\/a>. \u201cIf an arriving individual is not vaccinated, they must provide acceptable proof that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons to be able to access the same travel arrangement as fully vaccinated travelers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Open begins January 17 and runs through January 30 local time, meaning the first matches will begin on January 16 in the United States since Australia is a day ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
