That number is even higher in New York City, which reported that over half\u2013 51 percent \u2014 of hospitalized coronavirus patients were \u201cclassified as \u2018with\u2019 COVID, as opposed to [hospitalized] \u2018for\u2019 the virus,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10381687\/New-York-hospitals-admit-nearly-HALF-COVID-patients-admitted-unrelated-maladies.html\"><em>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In patients \u2018with\u2019 COVID, they were hospitalized for unrelated reasons, such as injuries in a car crash, but tested positive for the virus on the routine screening administered to all new patients and were subsequently reclassified as COVID admissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On Friday, for the second consecutive day, New York State saw its highest death toll from COVID-19 since the beginning of vaccinations and while things aren\u2019t as dire as during the pandemic\u2019s peak, cases continue to go up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) made the announcement on Friday, explaining her desire to \u201cdrill down into those numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnd I have two days\u2019 metrics right now, and looking at just the 4th of January, we realized that 39 percent of the people are hospitalized with non-COVID related reasons and checking in yesterday\u2019s number, that number was actually 42 percent,\u201d she said before pointing to variations in the state, including New York City, which is \u201cabout 50\/50.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cSo, half of the hospitalizations in New York City are someone who needs to be there because of the severity of their COVID situation and the other half are there for other reasons,\u201d she admitted before discussing other regions:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at upstate, Central New York places like that where 79 percent are admitted due to real COVID. And if they\u2019re sick enough from COVID that they have to be hospitalized versus a 21 percent who happened to be there for another reason and test positive. So that\u2019s a very interesting snapshot of what\u2019s going on across the state and even Central New York.&nbsp;But what a variation we\u2019re seeing there between Central New York and the city.<\/p>\n<p>We also know that 37 percent of positive cases overall were asymptomatic. And that\u2019s something we\u2019re going to talk about right now. And I want to get a little more clarity on that and what that means to someone who\u2019s in the field, who\u2019s actually dealing with this day to day and put it in perspective. Again, I want people to understand this is still a pandemic. The number of cases and hospitalizations are still rising. But let\u2019s look in the context of someone who actually runs the hospital.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the <em>New York Times\u2019<\/em> coronavirus data tracker, blue, pro-mandate&nbsp;New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/covid-cases.html\">reported<\/a> the second highest daily average of coronavirus cases per capita \u2014 413 cases per 100,000 people \u2014 an increase of 216 percent over the last 14 days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half of hospitalized coronavirus patients in New York were admitted for issues other than the virus itself, data released Friday revealed.
