The agency\u2019s preferred proposal would consist of electrifying \u201cat least\u201d 10% of its fleet.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, the USPS <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2021\/0223-multi-billion-dollar-modernization-of-postal-delivery-vehicle-fleet.htm\">announced<\/a> a multi-billion-dollar, 10-year deal with U.S. automaker Oshkosh Defense to produce fuel-efficient vehicles and some electric models. Climate activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/usps-to-continue-purchasing-gas-vehicles-despite-biden-all-electric-pledge\/595675\/\">characterized<\/a> the decision to purchase more internal combustion engine vehicles as \u201ca missed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile fully supporting environmentally sustainable technology in our fleet, there are operational limitations to electric-only vehicles and in certain postal delivery environments,\u201d&nbsp;Postmaster General Louis DeJoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/20519715-03-11-pmg-letter-next-gen-vehicles\">wrote<\/a> to lawmakers in March. \u201cThis includes a lack of available infrastructure, and as many as 12,500 postal routes where distance, environmental conditions, or facility limitations make electric vehicles unfeasible or impractical.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/07\/cecilia-martinez-white-house-climate-environmental-justice-joe-biden\/\">(RELATED: Senior White House Climate Official Resigns)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7349890\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7349890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testifies during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on Feb. 24 on Capitol Hill. President Joe Biden\u2019s spending package, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/19\/joe-manchin-no-vote-joe-biden-build-back-better-spending-bill\/\">effectively killed<\/a> by Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, included $6 billion in funds for creating a 70% electric USPS vehicle fleet and expanding charging infrastructure, The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2021\/10\/29\/biden-usps-dejoy-trucks\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But climate experts cast doubt on the agency\u2019s recent $3.3 billion estimate, saying that the projection was lazy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/postal-service-heres-the-price-tag-for-100-evs\/\">according<\/a> to E&amp;E News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem they\u2019ve done their homework,\u201d Patricio Portillo, an analyst at environmental group the Natural Resources Defense Council, told E&amp;E News.<\/p>\n<p>The USPS lost $69 billion between 2007 and 2018, according to a Government Accountability Office (GAO)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/key_issues\/us_postal_service_financial_viability\/issue_summary#:~:text=As%20stated%20in%20GAO&#039;s%202019,billion%20in%20fiscal%20year%202018.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> that called the postal service\u2019s financial position \u201cunsustainable.\u201d In 2021 alone, the postal service <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2021\/1110-usps-reports-fiscal-year-2021-results.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> a $6.9 billion loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur financial position is dire, stemming from substantial declines in mail volume, a broken business model and a management strategy that has not adequately addressed these issues,\u201d DeJoy <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2020\/0807-pmg-bog-meeting-comments.htm\">said<\/a> in 2020 after assuming his leadership role at the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/08\/05\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-steps-to-drive-american-leadership-forward-on-clean-cars-and-trucks\/\">vowed<\/a>&nbsp;to ensure 50% of private car sales are electric by 2030 and that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/08\/joe-biden-federal-government-carbon-neutral-electric-vehicle\/\">every addition<\/a> to the federal governments\u2019 massive vehicle fleet is an EV by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
