Currently, more than 99% of California residents<\/span> <span>\u2014<\/span> <span>over 40 million people<\/span> <span>\u2014<\/span> <span>live in \u201cpurple-tier\u201d counties, the most restrictive of the tiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a major step forward toward a goal that we share with so many parents: safe reopening of school buildings for students and staff,\u201d said the unions representing school employees. \u201cIn addition to reaching agreement around baseline safety standards, the unions also negotiated groundbreaking language that provides school district support for vaccine prioritization, availability, and education for their members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The agreement must still be approved by the board of education. Furthermore, even if the agreement is approved, the school district will still \u201cneed to reach an agreement with the teachers union on daily schedules and other educational aspects of in-person learning, which means there is still no target reopening date and the district is likely still several weeks, if not months, from bringing the first students back,\u201d reports the Chronicle.<\/p>\n<p><span>The agreement comes less than a week after San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/san-francisco-sues-its-own-school-district-over-re-opening-plan\"><span>filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco Unified School District<\/span><\/a> <span>and the board of education, accusing them of not having a concrete reopening plan as required by law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPrivate and parochial schools in San Francisco have figured it out,\u201d he said. \u201cIn-person instruction needs to be the Board of Education\u2019s singular focus \u2014 not renaming schools that are empty, or changing admission policies when teachers aren\u2019t in classrooms. It\u2019s unfortunate we have to take them to court to get it figured out, but enough is enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mayor London Breed (D), who has been pushing for schools to open, supported the lawsuit. She also held a press conference on Thursday, featuring children with signs saying \u201cI miss my friends,\u201d and called on officials and unions to come to a solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt just really breaks my heart to be here to see these kids and these families to know what they\u2019ve been going through,\u201d said Breed, who became teary at the press conference,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/education\/article\/In-tears-London-Breed-others-urge-S-F-15926633.php\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a> <span>the Chronicle. \u201cKids are struggling in our city and we all know it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the San Francisco city attorney filed the lawsuit against the school district, Los Angeles Councilman Joe Buscaino (D) announced that he would ask Los Angeles to file a similar lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is also closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI actually agree with the pediatricians,\u201d Buscaino told<\/span> <span>the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-02-04\/la-councilman-wants-sue-la-schools-reopen\"><span>Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/a> <span>in an interview, citing a recent statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics affiliate based in Southern California. \u201cI support the science that says it\u2019s safe for students to return to schools.
