Although the Democratic Party has long since transformed into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/biden-obama-hillary-democratic-party-victor-davis-hanson\">the party of the rich<\/a> and powerful, it has maintained its rhetorical position as a populist force aiding the underdog.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and \u201cprogressives\u201d increasingly warn that the American system itself teeters in the balance, and the greatest threat to \u201cOur Democracy\u201d\u2122 are often elections. (They seem particularly concerned about the threat to \u201cdemocracy\u201d posed by their party\u2019s impending shellacking in the 2022 midterm elections.) The juxtaposition seems so ironic that only reading their harried, hair-on-fire warnings can establish that they have actually made this argument. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Rep. Eric Swalwell warns 2022 could be \u2018the last election\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While savvy, sophisticated politicians might subtly imply that their defeat would topple the U.S. system, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said the soft part loud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried that if Republicans win in the midterm elections, that voting as we know it in this country will be gone,\u201d Swalwell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/last-election-dem-rep-swalwell-oddly-claims-2022-could-be-nations-final-vote-if-republicans-win-midterms\">told<\/a> MSNBC\u2019s \u201cAll In With Chris Hayes\u201d on January 3. \u201cThis is not only the most important election, if we don\u2019t get it right, it could be the last election.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Of course, Congressman Swalwell had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/president-swalwell-lewandowski-mocks-swalwell-ryan-saavedra\">unfortunate experience with elections<\/a> during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, which he exited seven months before the Iowa caucuses after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rep-eric-swalwell-drops-out-of-democratic-presidential-primary\">failing to garner 1% support<\/a> in most polls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Defeat Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, because \u2018American democracy is at stake\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next to President Donald Trump, few people fill the Left with bile as much as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). His opponent has accused DeSantis of seeking to destroy democracy. \u201cAmerican democracy is at stake in this year\u2019s elections. Ron DeSantis does not want your vote to count\u2013we\u2019ve got to band together and stop him,\u201d Charlie Crist \u2014 the Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat seeking the Democratic nomination for governor this year \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CharlieCrist\/status\/1478539248798208000\">tweeted<\/a> on January 4.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">American democracy is at stake in this year\u2019s elections. Ron DeSantis does not want your vote to count\u2013we\u2019ve got to band together and stop him.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Charlie Crist (@CharlieCrist) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CharlieCrist\/status\/1478539248798208000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crist, too, has reason to believe elections threaten his future. \u201cHe lost two times to Republican Marco Rubio during the election- first in the primary, and again, after he re-entered the race as an independent candidate in the general election,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Charlie_Crist\">noted<\/a> Ballotpedia. Crist then lost the 2014 Florida governor\u2019s race to Republican Rick Scott. He previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/resources\/cms-content\/documents\/FederalElections98_SenateResults.pdf\">lost<\/a> the 1998 U.S. Senate race to incumbent Democrat Bob Graham by 25%, and nearly 1 million votes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. &nbsp;A Republican victory in the 2022 midterms would render the 2024 election \u2018illegitimate\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While many have singled out specific politicians, some have claimed that any Republican victory would not only undermine fair elections but render future elections \u201cillegitimate.\u201d One of these is analyst Ian Bremmer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurasiagroup.net\/people\/ibremmer\">founder<\/a> of the Eurasia Group, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2022\/01\/04\/ian_bremmer_constitutional_crisis_if_trump-led_republicans_win_in_2022_and_2024.html\">told<\/a> CBS News on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1478400381562593285\">January 4<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>This is the most important midterm election in American history. We have January 6 coming in just a day. And as you know from the profoundly challenged election of 2020, no lessons have been learned at all in the United States. The country is much more divided. \u2026 The United States has an election process that is increasingly broken and increasingly delegitimized. And the midterm elections especially, if you have a significant win for a Trump-led Republican Party, means that 2024 will be seen as illegitimate and potentially a constitutional crisis. In the world\u2019s most powerful country, it is hard not to rank that high on your list.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The party that controls the White House historically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vitalstats_ch2_tbl4.pdf\">loses seats<\/a> in Congress during the midterm elections as part of the cycle of voters expressing their displeasure with the incumbent. Bremmer did not elaborate on how the anticipated Republican victory in the 2022 would render the next presidential election \u201cillegitimate,\u201d nor did CBS News ask him to do so.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CBS Morning&#8217;s guest Ian Bremmer says &#8220;2024 is going to be seen as illegitimate and potentially a constitutional crisis&#8221; if there is a &#8220;significant win for a Trump-led Republican party&#8221; in the 2022 midterms. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oQO2mA6ign\">pic.twitter.com\/oQO2mA6ign<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1478400381562593285?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. NBC News ties school board elections to January 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NBC News reporter Brandy Zadrozny artificed an investigative journalism piece attempting to tie school board elections to January 6. \u201cAfter their failed attempt to overturn a presidential election perceived as stolen, domestic extremists retreated to their backyards,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/extremism-us-jan-6-capitol-rcna10731\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cOn popular QAnon forums, influencers urged followers to get involved with school committees and boards and run for election at any level.\u201d As proof Zadrozny reported that, in three months, people she describes as extremists attended two meetings in the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Public_school_district_(United_States)\">13,800 school districts<\/a>.
