Allowing infected health workers to continue their duties is needed \u201cdue to the critical staffing shortages currently being experienced across the health care continuum,\u201d according to the health department\u2019s letter, posted online Saturday, to acute care and psychiatric hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The loosened requirements apply only to health care workers who are asymptomatic, and they will need to wear N95 respirators rather than standard medical face masks. The department wants such workers to treat only patients who already have tested positive, the letter said, although it acknowledges that \u201cthis may not always be possible in settings such as the emergency department\u201d where everyone\u2019s infection status is not always known.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Unions representing hospital staff voiced opposition to the new policy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, Gov. Gavin Newsom, with the support of the unions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2021\/07\/26\/california-implements-first-in-the-nation-measures-to-encourage-state-employees-and-health-care-workers-to-get-vaccinated\/\">imposed<\/a> vaccine mandates on health care workers in the state, boasting that California was the first state to have done so.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Because these vaccine mandates were imposed at the state level, they were not suspended by ongoing litigation against the Biden administration\u2019s vaccine mandates, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/12\/01\/covid-why-california-is-moving-forward-with-firing-vaccine-resistant-health-care-workers\/\">hundreds<\/a> of health care workers in California, a small percentage of the total, quit or were suspended or fired for refusing to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>California is in the midst of its worst coronavirus surge of the entire pandemic, thanks to the infectious omicron variant.<\/p>\n<p>The state is so short-staffed that Gov. Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/health\/2022\/01\/09\/gavin-newsom-breaks-promise-to-provide-covid-tests-calls-out-national-guard-to-help\/\">called out<\/a> the National Guard last week to assist with coronavirus testing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
