Why? Because the crime rate started falling.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Fast.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Rudy Giuliani, the crime-fighting mayor from 1994 to 2002, was the turnaround figure, bringing in a new chief of the NYPD, Bill Bratton, who used data, as well as tough tactics, to bring crooks to heel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>And for a time, the successors of Giuliani and Bratton were happy to keep riding on their positive momentum.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>By 2017, the number of murders and serious crimes in the city had fallen by three-quarters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19414842\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19414842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AP8911061581.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1316\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York City mayoral candidate Rudolph Giuliani, center, is surrounded by supporters and reporters as he accepts a pre-election day endorsement from police fraternal groups at the Woolworth Building in New York on November 6, 1989. (AP Photo\/Mario Suriani)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yet then came widespread wokeness, Black Lives Matter, and defund the police.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>And so in the past few years, crime in New York City has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/01\/nyc-recorded-485-murders-in-2021\/\">spiked<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>(And elsewhere, too, of course.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So now comes news that might make Hollywood think that it\u2019s time for an <i>Escape From New York<\/i> reboot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>On January 4, the<i> New York Post<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/04\/manhattan-da-alvin-bragg-to-stop-seeking-prison-in-some-cases\/\">scooped<\/a> that the new district attorney for Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, doesn\u2019t really believe in prison: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In his first memo to staff on Monday, Alvin Bragg said his office \u201cwill not seek a carceral sentence\u201d except with homicides and a handful of other cases, including domestic violence felonies, some sex crimes and public corruption.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We might observe that \u201ccarceral\u201d is the politically correct way of saying \u201cprison.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>The <i>Post<\/i> continued, describing the new procedures that Bragg has in mind:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Assistant district attorneys must also now keep in mind the \u201cimpacts of incarceration,\u201d including whether it really does increase public safety,&nbsp;potential future barriers&nbsp;to convicts involving housing and employment, the financial cost of prison and the racial disparities over who gets time, Bragg instructed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The idea, of course, is <i>not<\/i> to put the guilty in jail or prison.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Peter Moskos, a realistic criminologist at Manhattan\u2019s John Jay College, looked at Bragg\u2019s memo and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/petermoskos\/status\/1478456322483961857?s=11\">pronounced<\/a>, \u201cThis seems like a big deal\u201d\u2014as in, a major policy shift. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19414810\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19414810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AP21309075413955.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1288\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manhattan\u2019s newly-elected district attorney Alvin Bragg speaks to supporters in New York on November 2, 2021. (AP Photo\/Craig Ruttle)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">In addition, as the Manhattan Institute\u2019s Thomas Hogan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/what-will-alvin-bragg-mean-for-manhattan\">points<\/a> out, according to his own memo:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">Bragg will immediately begin de-prosecuting certain offenses, refusing to punish violations of certain duly enacted criminal laws. These include resisting arrest, trespassing, fare evasion, marijuana possession, driving with a suspended license, and any traffic violation. Manhattan apparently must accept disorder on the sidewalks, streets, and subways;&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">and the police must prepare for resistance at every arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterMoskos\/status\/1478458885774188546\">resisting arrest<\/a> is no longer rated as an offense. Got&nbsp;that, crooks?<\/p>\n<p>Conservative pundits have pounced.&nbsp;Byron York <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByronYork\/status\/1478489765406294023\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cNew DA takes office, lays foundation for next crime wave.\u201d &nbsp;Mickey Kaus <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kausmickey\/status\/1478505662418014209\">volunteered<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be the Wild West.\u201d &nbsp;And Andrew Sullivan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sullydish\/status\/1478507799667740677?s=11\">added<\/a>, \u201cThe decision to unleash violent crime against citizens is a deliberate act.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Yes, Bragg is another one of those prosecutors who opposes law enforcement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Others include San Francisco\u2019s Chiesa Boudin, Chicago\u2019s Kim Foxx, and Philadelphia\u2019s Larry Krasner. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>And in each case, just as night follows day, the local crime rate has zoomed. Yes too, Bragg is another George Soros production.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Last year, one of the left-wing billionaire\u2019s front groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/crime\/2022\/01\/04\/soros-linked-manhattan-da-alvin-bragg-no-incarceration-except-for-homicide-and-a-few-other-cases\/\">gave<\/a> Bragg $1 million. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the blunt <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1478543927284314112\">phrasing<\/a> of Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), \u201cSoros prosecutors are a threat to the safety of every American.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>(One wonders if a crime victim could sue Soros for damages.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>He\u2019s doing great harm, and he certainly has deep pockets.)<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New York&#8217;s &#8220;prosecutor&#8221; announced that armed robbery is now only a misdemeanor offense. <\/p>\n<p>Soros prosecutors are a threat to the safety of every American.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Cotton (@TomCottonAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1478543927284314112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>In the meantime, it\u2019s easy to see what\u2019s going to happen in Manhattan. The cops will arrest someone for, say, robbery, and the suspect will laugh, smug in the knowledge that he\u2019ll get a slap on the wrist and nothing more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Maybe the perp will plead guilty\u2014why not?\u2014confident that he\u2019ll be out on the streets again in an hour or two.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>In return for his right to roam once again, all the bad guy has to do is check in on some \u201ccounseling\u201d program\u2014although, of course, if he doesn\u2019t, well, that\u2019s okay. Soon enough, the cops will get the message: why risk a lawsuit or even their lives to bust someone when it doesn\u2019t do any good? (<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">The&nbsp;academic term for this phenomenon is \u201cde-policing,\u201d and it\u2019s already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0047272721001936?casa_token=9xuDpAZKc10AAAAA:CdFqmGXdIzvThNzOFxAfXxvvwkJJLWZi3ceUAh1hIbSPmcncdIykoWxOH_LHJJFKvD393NlEChs\">observable<\/a>&nbsp;across the&nbsp;<\/span>nation.)<\/p>\n<p>And so the crime rate will soar to 1981 levels\u2014and beyond.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is not what the people of New York City want.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Last year, they voted for Eric Adams for mayor; Adams is a tough-minded Democrat, having spent 20 years in the NYPD; he ran on an explicitly law-and-order platform, aiming to reverse the recent crime-spike.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Last July, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2021\/07\/07\/eric-adams-we-need-to-stop-believing-that-we-should-have-the-right-tweets-we-should-have-the-right-safe-streets\/\">he said<\/a> that safe communities are \u201cthe prerequisite to prosperity.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>And in a swipe at performative wokeness, he jibed, \u201cIt\u2019s time for us to stop believing that we should have the right tweets. We should have the right safe <i>streets<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams knows that you can\u2019t have safe streets without criminals being physically removed from said streets.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>So there\u2019s a collision coming, between law-and-order Adams and his colleague in city government, no-law-and-no-order Bragg.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19414794\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19414794\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AP21309075436661.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric Adams acknowledge the cheers of supporters following his election win as New York City\u2019s new mayor, on November 2, 2021, in New York. And so maybe he can\u2019t criticize Bragg too much, because let\u2019s face it: opposition to the punishment of criminals is a substantial current in Democratic thinking. And that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2022\/01\/06\/malliotakis-adams-engaged-in-mixed-messaging-on-crime-by-praising-manhattan-d-a-well-see-if-it-was-all-rhetoric\/\">led<\/a>&nbsp;Rep. Nicole Malliotakis,&nbsp;the lone Republican in New York City\u2019s Congressional delegation, to point to Adams\u2019 \u201cmixed messaging\u201d on crime. &nbsp;Yes, he has talked tough, and yet at the same time, he has praised Bragg. Malliotakis predicts \u201cNew York City is going to see now\u2026unfortunately, a move toward the anarchy of Portland, the murders of Chicago, the smash-and-grabs of San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what will Mayor Adams do? It\u2019s possible that he will talk tough while nevertheless allowing Bragg to loose anarchy. In which case, for New York City, it\u2019s disaster and d\u00e9gringolade.<\/p>\n<p>On the other it\u2019s possible that Adams means what he says and wants to do a good job and make the city safe.
