The child pictured is not Vallaud-Belkacem but a girl identified only as \u201cFouzia,\u201d according to its original caption.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image shared on Facebook includes two photographs, one of a young girl holding a stick while sitting in a field and another that shows an adult woman. \u201cThe girl on the left is herding sheep in Morocco,\u201d reads text included in the image. \u201cThe woman on the Right is the same girl 20 years later as the [sic] France\u2019s education minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A reverse image search reveals the adult woman pictured is Vallaud-Belkacem, who served as France\u2019s minister of national education, higher education and research from 2014 to 2017, according to her biography on the European Union\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/default\/files\/cv-vallaud-belkacem_en_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. The same photo was published by the&nbsp;French-language women\u2019s magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grazia.fr\/news-et-societe\/news\/10-choses-a-savoir-sur-najat-vallaud-belkacem-premiere-femme-ministre-de-l-553010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grazia<\/a> in a 2014 article with a headline that translates to \u201c10 Things to Know About Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, First Woman Minister of Education.\u201d A nearly identical photo of her&nbsp;was also published in 2014 by the French newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.20minutes.fr\/sport\/1401530-20140615-20140615-mondial-2014-najat-vallaud-belkacem-bleus-dassez-beaux-gosses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20 Minutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the Facebook post\u2019s claim, however, the other picture is not Vallaud-Belkacem as a child. Check Your Fact traced that photo to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.nl\/files\/unicef%20child-notice-marokko.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 report<\/a> from the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) where it is credited to the photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pirozziphoto\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giacomo Pirozzi<\/a>. While the photo bears no caption in the report, a UNICEF spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email that \u201cThe caption we have for the photo lists the girl as being named Fouzia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pirozzi confirmed in a Facebook message to Check Your Fact that he took the picture but denied that it showed the former minister. \u201cI took the photo of this girl in Morocco, but there is no relation between this girl and the Min of Education,\u201d said Pirozzi. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/24\/fact-check-image-bill-gates-child-wearing-dress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show Bill Gates As A Child Wearing A Dress?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While there is no evidence Vallaud-Belkacem is the girl in the first picture, she explained in a 2017 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.najat-vallaud-belkacem.com\/2017\/03\/30\/every-struggle-is-an-opportunity-entretien-porter-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Porter Magazine<\/a> that she was born in Morocco to a poor family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReports in the French press that I was a child shepherd hold a grain of truth: I was born in Morocco and lived in Bni Chiker, a mountain hamlet in the north,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.najat-vallaud-belkacem.com\/2017\/03\/30\/every-struggle-is-an-opportunity-entretien-porter-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Vallaud-Belkacem. \u201cMy early childhood was spent as a country girl living with near and extended family, all under one roof. We were quite poor.
