A huge amount of health policy, economic policy, and even elections across the free world for the past two years was driven by assertions that certain countries had lower Chinese coronavirus death tolls than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><i><span>Science <\/span><\/i><span>noted a study using methodology similar to Jha\u2019s found Russia\u2019s true total of coronavirus deaths is at least 4.5 times higher than the official count, for example, and researchers accuse authoritarian governments in places like Nicaragua, Belarus, and Egypt of fudging their numbers in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Russia at 1.04 MILLION excess deaths since March 2020, which is about 240% higher than their reported COVID-19 deaths. <\/p>\n<p>This is 1st place worldwide (for countries with data) in absolute excess mortality, 2nd place on per capita terms and 9th on p-score.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/poptwitter?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#poptwitter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/epitwitter?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#epitwitter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aLBRRht3z2\">pic.twitter.com\/aLBRRht3z2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ariel Karlinsky (@ArielKarlinsky) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArielKarlinsky\/status\/1477531141510946818?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The world always should have known better than to trust proven-liar regimes like China, Russia, or Iran to report their coronavirus numbers accurately \u2013 but a great deal of lockdown policy in the West was driven by organizations like W.H.O. accepting potentially \u2013 and sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2020\/03\/20\/china-stopped-counting-mild-coronavirus-cases-in-february\/\">admittedly<\/a> \u2013 corrupt data from authoritarians, without independent verification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even if asterisks were appended to some of the numbers to show they were questionable, there was a general trend of treating some countries as better or worse coronavirus fighters based on the numbers they reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the case of India, Jha questioned the \u201cunusually low mortality rate\u201d of 340 coronavirus deaths per million touted by India, a rate only one-seventh of per capita coronavirus deaths in the United States. He looked at independent polls that asked Indian citizens if anyone in their household had died from Chinese coronavirus, pored over reports submitted by hospitals, and counted death certificates to produce a true total of between 2,300 and 2,500 deaths per million as of September, which is much closer to the U.S. mortality rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Jha bluntly accused the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of \u201ctrying to suppress the numbers\u201d for political reasons.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think the political pressures were such that they said, \u2018Anything that\u2019s going to come out is going to be embarrassing,\u2019\u201d Jha ventured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Science <\/span><\/i><span>quoted other epidemiologists who cut Modi a little slack by noting India\u2019s reporting systems are notoriously slow and \u201cdisorganized,\u201d so Indian officials made some bad decisions based on poor data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIndia paid a heavy price for not having good real-time data on deaths, especially during the first wave. That led to complacency and a terrible toll in the second wave,\u201d said Ashoka University virologist Shahid Jameel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Princeton University epidemiologist Ramanan Laxminarayan proposed that \u201call governments want to downplay the degree of deaths,\u201d but arguably the U.S. and some other Western governments sought to <\/span><span>exaggerate <\/span><span>the number of deaths and coronavirus cases for political reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>American media consumers are wearily familiar with reports that treat \u201cdied <\/span><i><span>with<\/span><\/i><span>\u201d and \u201cdied <\/span><i><span>of<\/span><\/i><span>\u201d coronavirus as synonymous.
