Every Democrat voted to send checks to prisoners, and every Republican voted to stop prisoners from getting checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The left recognizes that this was a bad idea and that they&#8217;re going to pay a price at the polls. <\/p>\n<p>Get ready for campaign ads. <\/p>\n<p>So liberals and their media allies are trying to spin it for damage control.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Cotton (@TomCottonAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1368933169337090055?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cThe left recognizes that this was a bad idea and that they\u2019re going to pay a price at the polls.&nbsp;&nbsp; Get ready for campaign ads. &nbsp;So liberals and their media allies are trying to spin it for damage control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to Cotton\u2019s tweet two days earlier saying that the mass-murderer behind the 2015 Charleston church shooting would receive a stimulus check and also responding to Republicans\u2019 actions in the Senate, Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote in an article titled, \u201cMurderers, undocumented immigrants: Hyped-up claims about who\u2019s getting stimulus checks,\u201d \u201cEvery Senate bill that proceeds on a fast-track process known as reconciliation features a strange ritual called \u2018vote-a-rama,\u2019 as lawmakers race through a number of votes on amendments.&nbsp;If you are in the minority, as Republicans are now, it\u2019s a moment when you can offer finely tuned amendments that are destined to fail but will serve up red meat for voters in later elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler continued, \u201cThese quotes are an example of this process in action, with Cotton tweeting a talking point just hours after the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;stimulus bill was approved. Cotton isn\u2019t shy about his intentions either. On March 8, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1368933169337090055\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;that [name withheld], the Boston bomber, would also get benefits and declared, \u201cGet ready for campaign ads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler called Cotton\u2019s rhetoric \u201cscaremongering\u201d and gave Cotton \u201ctwo Pinocchios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on Thursday, after news broke that one of the Boston bomber\u2019s would indeed receive a stimulus check, Kessler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/03\/09\/murderers-undocumented-immigrants-hyped-claims-about-whos-getting-stimulus-checks\/\">backtracked<\/a> in a way, acknowledging the fact but still defending himself, and printing a heads-up he had received from Cotton\u2019s press secretary, James Arnold, who wrote:<\/p>\n<p><em>You portrayed Senator Cotton\u2019s amendment as pure political theater\u2014\u201dnot serious legislation\u201d\u2014warning of an outcome that, according to your article, was very unlikely to happen\u2026.Now that it has in fact happened, we\u2019re asking that you update your story to include that Senator Cotton\u2019s concerns did come true and that his amendment would have prevented it. \u2026 we also disagree with your claims that Senator Cotton\u2019s efforts were solely political, designed only for campaign ads etc., instead of based on legitimate policy disagreements.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kessler defended himself, writing, \u201cCotton primarily received the Two-Pinocchio rating because his comments lacked context. He suggested this problem was the result of something Democrats did, when he had previously voted for legislation with the same language that allowed for checks to be issued to prisoners. He also made it clear that he intended weaponize this debate for campaign ads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He concluded, \u201c\u2026 in retrospect, the use of the phrase of \u2018scaremongering\u2019 was inappropriate. Cotton had raised a legitimate issue of concern, even if he framed it in a political way. The term \u2018hyped up\u2019 in the headline went too far as well.
