Antrim Ashers bakery to court after issues regarding a cake order emerged in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>While the order was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland\/european-court-to-rule-on-ashers-gay-cake-saga-man-tried-but-failed-to-order-3650-cake-at-belfast-bakery-in-2014-41213196.html\">initially<\/a> accepted, Lee\u2019s request was subsequently denied by the bakery due to the messaging the activist had requested to appear on the baked good.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, supported by&nbsp;Northern Ireland\u2019s Equality Commission, subsequently came out on top after a number of initial rulings in 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ashers bakery owners&nbsp;Daniel and Amy McArthur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2018\/10\/10\/gay-cake-case-uk-supreme-court-rules-favour-christian-bakers\/\">appealed<\/a> the rulings to the UK\u2019s Supreme Court with support from the Christian Institute.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The pair\u2019s appeal succeeded in 2018, with the court\u2019s then-president, Brenda Hale, noting that the bakery\u2019s refusal was based on the family\u2019s religious beliefs regarding marriage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs to Mr Lee\u2019s claim based on sexual discrimination, the bakers did not refuse to fulfil his order because of his sexual orientation,\u201d Hale stated, instead noting that it was over the McArthur\u2019s belief that \u201cthe only form of marriage consistent with the Bible and acceptable to God is between a man and a woman\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would have refused to make such a cake for any customer, irrespective of their sexual orientation,\u201d Hale concluded. \u201cTheir objection was to the message on the cake, not to the personal characteristics of Mr Lee or of anyone else with whom he was associated.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The baker who was sued for refusing to make a cake for a same-sex wedding because of his religious conscience, was back in court on Northern Ireland bakery echoes the ordeals of a Christian baker in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Having been hauled through the US court system over his refusal to bake a same-sex marriage cake, winning a case in the US Supreme Court on the issue in 2018, Jack Phillips found himself in the firing line once&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/04\/10\/colorado-baker-sued-again-turning-down-gender-transition-cake\/\">again<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This time however, Phillips was being sued to the tune of $100,000 for refusing to bake a \u201cgender transition\u201d cake.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips was subsequently found to have broken&nbsp;the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act with the refusal, being handed down a $500 fine by a district court in Denver <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/18\/us\/jack-phillips-colorado-baker-discrimination-trnd\/index.html\">according<\/a> to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s decision however is to be appealed, according to Phillip\u2019s attorney, Kristen Waggoner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An LGBT activist has
