Steve Scalise is urging President Joe Biden to \u201cdo everything in [his] power\u201d to keep schools open amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Scalise cites school closures in Chicago prompted by a teachers\u2019 union <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/06\/chicago-teachers-union-public-school-cancel-classes\/\">strike<\/a>, as well as widespread learning loss and mental health <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/11\/san-francisco-sues-school-district-dennis-herrera-mental-health-crisis-school-closure\/\">disorders<\/a>, particularly among low income and minority students, as the impetus for his letter, obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller. Schools have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/01\/1033213936\/survey-school-superintendents-federal-covid-relief-money-spending\">received<\/a> $189 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funds, although large portions of that money have not yet been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/16\/school-reopening-emergency-funding-joe-biden-coronavirus-plan\/\">spent<\/a>. In addition to the Chicago strike, major school districts in Democrat-run <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/03\/public-schools-closed-spring-new-york-dc\/\">cities<\/a> such as New York, Washington, D.C., and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/04\/detroit-public-school-board-member-covid-flatten-the-curve\/\">Detroit<\/a> have been shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have repeatedly shown that schools have lower rates of COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/science\/science-briefs\/transmission_k_12_schools.html\">transmission<\/a> than their surrounding communities, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/13\/covid-19-coronavirus-age-risk-unvaccinated-kids-vaccinated-elderly\/\">children<\/a> are not at significant <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/08\/06\/children-do-not-spread-coronavirus-school-setting-adults-multiple-studies-show\/\">risk<\/a> of catching and spreading COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Biden\u2019s time in office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has waffled on its recommendations for managing COVID-19. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in early February that teachers would not need to be vaccinated in order for schools to safely re-open, but <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/03\/cdc-teachers-vaccination-covid-reopen-schools\/\">reversed<\/a> herself after White House press secretary Jen Psaki claimed that she was only speaking in her personal capacity. As a Harvard professor, Walensky <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/15\/cdc-director-rochelle-walensky-opening-schools-position\/\">claimed<\/a> that students should only be required to sit three feet apart to limit the spread of the disease, but revised her estimation to six feet after entering the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration and teachers\u2019 unions repeatedly coordinated on school reopening plans, emails obtained by the watchdog group Americans for Public Trust <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/08\/report-teachers-unions-bullied-the-white-house-cdc-into-changing-school-masking-guidelines\/\">revealed<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/19\/senate-republicans-cdc-dhs-reopening-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Senate Republicans Demand Answers From Biden Admin About Coordinating Reopening Guidance With Teachers Unions)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden says he believes schools should remain open but he has yet to stand up to the radical teachers unions. Throughout the pandemic, President Biden has put union bosses first and America\u2019s students last. The Biden Administration allowed a teachers union to dictate CDC guidance effectively keeping schools shuttered and has not taken bold action to reopen all of America\u2019s classrooms.
